well,... i go to a lot of trouble customizing my shortcut keys unfortunatly, lately i keep installing all kinds of demos and deinstaling them and my sistem needs to be reinstalled pretty quick. no pbm ... until i start reconfiguring my preferences in my programs. as i use archicad very much,i nned the shortcuts but it's kinda tough redefining keyboard shortcuts... whole lotta' them
i'm sure a similar question arose s'mwhere in the forum but i can't find it ... and i think .. it didn't receave a answer. at least at the time i saw it
i hope i'm not too bothersome asking it again ... 10x a lot

i'm using Archicad 8.1 on XP

there is a file that will carry over your keyboard shortcuts and stuff like that.
It is called 'ArchiCAD (version number) lasting.prf' and can be found at:

(root drive):\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Graphisoft\(Archicad version)\

just copy that file across to the folder for the version that you want to migrate your settings to(assuming you have it installed), and thats it.

So am I to understand that coping the suggested file from one version to another is not always the best way? I hope this is fixed soon...I would hate to spend about 1 hour per machine everytime we upgrade...which seems to be quite often lately. I know that it doesn't seem like much time...but it adds up over the course of a year.

the issue, as far as i'm concerned, is more to do with the 8.0 release rather than an ongoing trend in archiCAD file formats. sure, there will always be a few quirks when major new features are introduced because the file format has to change in order to accommodate them, but archiCAD 8.0 was an exception!

there seemed to be far too many flaws in the program when it was released (i don't think there will be too many people arguing with that!), and as such it was also writing a lot of bad stuff into its files, prefs, whatever that carried over to later version file formats, corrupting them as a result.

my recommendation was that you should begin a-fresh with 8.1 purely for this technical reason. opening older (pre 8.0) files in archiCAD 8.1 is not too much of a problem as long as you save as an archive in the earlier version. there has also been no problem migrating from one to another of any of the 8.1 patch releases . . . but i still tend to start over having had my fingers burned with 8.0.
