Alt grabbing and injecting into another not working

I would usually alt to bring up the eye dropper to grab the characteristics of one element say a window, then alt+ctrl to inject it into another which would change it to that type but it doesnt seem to be working for me now, any advice on what might be wrong?

Are you saying there is no dropper/syringe?

Or they are there but just don't work?
If that is the case it could be the current transfer settings.
When you bring up the syringe you should see a small text box that has the current transfer setting - you can click in that box to bring up other settings.

Edit => Element Settings => Element Transfer Settings...
