today "only" one crash, although pretty cautious use: only one at a time (archicad OR plotmaker), so emergency measures are postponed for the time being.

I wonder if we can actually FIND someone who uses Vista and 9 or 10.

the application and project loading as well as the 3d conversion and OpenGL performance is pretty impressive.

other than the obvious waste of time (haggling w/ fry's, packing up the box, waiting for it to be ready, license and labor, ...), the developer in me is curious about WHAT actually is incompatible with Vista? dialog manager? memory handling? file manager? an API that is not implemented?

we'll keep you posted...

I had expected it would be a mess when they opened the 3D window because I thought openGL wasn't supported, but it looked and performed just fine, so I am wondering also about other user's experiences with Vista....

Also Quicktime (now 7.1.6) is not yet supported on Vista which means you cannot save quicktime movies. (fly-through, vr object/scene)

Of course you could save AVI-s, but Vista has a bug which makes it impossible. It will be fixed in Service Pack 1.

So if you need movies, then switch when either of them is fixed.

If you wait for ArchiCAD 11, you will have better support.

I have tried AC10 EDU on Vista 64-bit and it worked more or less:
- no WIBU drivers at that time (now they are available)
- no Amyuni driver support (not required anymore with AC11)
- no Aero interface (no problem)
- rather slow

But it seemed to be compatible at first sight. I have not tested extensively and did not install AC10 on my current Vista install anymore.

Apparently Cigraph is counting on ArchiCAD 11 to be Vista certified.
I hope it will be soon.

<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.cigraph.it/cigraph/pagetrans ... ews_id=107">http://www.cigraph.it/cigraph/pagetrans.do?view=HOME_NEWS&action=notizie_det&lang=en&pof=0&news_id=107</LINK_TEXT>

" ArchiCAD 11 certified compatibility on Vista guarantees Cigraph's Plug-ins will work fine on it.
All the Cigraph's Plug-ins will be available for ArchiCAD 8.1, 9, 10 and 11."
New computers are shipping with Vista. so it is not really optional anymore.

The client I work with bought one and I was working on getting a usable AC9 workstation out of it. (athlon 64x2/geforce 8800) Based on the recommendations and custom install without gs shell extension, then before running downloading the wibu driver installation was successful.
the 3d model in opengl was obscured and was visible only during rotation. Downloading the latest nvidia driver fixed this problem, but it might be a side effect of a new driver, since Vista has turned the color scheme to Vista Basic claiming that the new driver is not compatible with the Aero color scheme.
after that so far (1 day) here are the still outstanding problems/issues:

-for any other account than the admin (under which AC was installed) Archicad exits with the following: Application failed to initialize: error 0x0002, even if the account has system administrator privileges.

-plotmaker is crashing (not responding) frequently when updating a freshly published pmk file from archicad

-the pdf problem I plan to work around with checking a vista compatible version of PDFCreator - a freeware I was very happy with on XP

-There is no designjet driver for Vista (AT ALL, let alone 430 with jetdirect)
so I installed a laserjet driver with the jetdirect ip address, and plotmaker did plot to that driver without any problem- so far

....on a new Mac

it is an experience straight out of the Mac commercial, you constantly compare it to the "starting up a mac" experience

as I saw more examples running windowsXP on the macbook pro WHEN necessary it feels like my next windows workhorse will be a mac.

I saw Archicad demoed on it, and lately on the Maker's Faire lot of developers did their windows development, Visual Studio on MacBook Pros- SWEET!

as for Vista/XP goes, it's deja vu all over again: 3.11/95, 98/95, NT/98, 2000/NT, XP/2000.... with ever more restrictive licensing agreements...

"stick to XP(2000,NT)" sounds good, but at one point the changing reality makes it a luddite argument.

sure, the earlier you adapt, the more thorns you will meet, but the later you adapt, the harder it will be.

kind'a analog to when you liked a couple things better in the earlier version of ArchiCAD, but you would be looking strangely today on the person who sticks with ArchiCAD 7 on Mac OS9

Vista by the way is looking appealing, nicer, more up to date, eventually better user experience (once you explore it), but takes some patience and learning - which I hate to dedicate to Redmond idiosyncrasies

so: if you are working on XP, don't jump.
if the vendor asks what version you prefer on your new PC: XP
if the purchase you are comfortable with comes with Vista: don't freak out, take some time adjusting to it and figuring it out.
I generally wait about 6 months to 1 year to upgrade to a new version of Windows (though I think I got NT4.0 soon after it was released) - at least until service pack one is released. It definitely saves a lot of trouble.

On the Mac side I usually wait a few days to see if there are any significant issues before I update/upgrade.
Over time XP will feel awkward compared to Vista- once you figured it out.
But there are circumstances (new machine, working in mixed environment), which could color the picture somewhat.
BTW. it wouldn't be such a bad idea from goodwill perspective that if there is a fix GS would release it. The Vista issues posted by GS are for versions 9 and 10, so this is not far fetched in the real world. I bet I'm not alone.

This is talk, and I posted here the experience that other people can learn for it, and maybe I can learn from other people's experiences.

I'm not here to defend Graphisoft, but if the client insists on running an older release, I would advise to run it in an environment for which is was properly tested...
I have used Virtual PC in cases where I needed a really old application to run in its old OS on a current PC. That might work just fine. I'm not sure about dongle-compatibility, though.

Fixing patches, compiled and supported, are hard to justify when current development has just finished release 11. It would probably help a lot to disable any fancyness in Vista (Aero) and run in XP or 2000-mode.

The whole CAD world seems to agree to not advice the use of Vista for CAD and 3D applications. There has to be a reason for that <E>😉</E>

(FWIW, I have installed Vista, but do my main work in XP and OSX).
