Single building site plan

I can't believe I didn't go to ACUW! What was I thinking? Oh well definitely next year. I posted a question a while back on multiple buildings one site and got an excellent response. I would also like to hear opinions on how others are doing single buildings. I downloaded some free templates that used separate site and building pln. 's and suggested hotlinks. I used this method on a project and it worked ok. I had a problem linking my site model to my building model and ended up doing the opposite, one story at a time. This method didn't allow me to modify the foundation steps to fit the terrain while the terrain was there if that makes any sense. The problems I had with the hotlink was with arciterra elements. I had a couple of roads on the site and when I hotlinked the site to the building .pln the roads were about 75' off to the side of the terrain!! and being a hotlink I couldn't adjust them. This may have been a freak bug. I went and shot a new site today and have data in AC. I am trying to decide whether to attempt the hotlink again or try single model this time. Maybe hotlink before the terrain gets to complex? Other than the incident above I am very impressed with the hotlink tools. I know, my posts get a little sporadic at this time of night. I've also used that system after I got it (maxats) for 1 or 2 projects, but have since found it much easier to just do everything in one file. Then again I do mostly residential projects on regular rectalinear lots wich are oriented in either N-S or E-W direction. I'll probably end up going to the 2-pln format if anything more complicated comes along.

But like you said, in the 2-pln format, it's tough to know which floor to hotlink, since you'll probably need the first floor plan for building footprint and site features, and you only need the building outline for simplicity, and I usually prefer to show the top/roof plan view, and... But that's my current solution. I'd also be interested to see how others are doing things. Maybe I can improve some things also.

I have been following Fabrizio's recommendation of linking the ArchiTerra model into the .pln file, which works well since the site is always on a single story. For the site plan, I use the separate file method, a la the MaxATS templates that ship with AC.

For a single building project I prefer to always keep the site in the same file as the building.

For retirement villages and other multi buiding developments the project is usually done in stages, and I insert objects made from stripped down versions of the different building types in the main site development plan.

For the CD's the site plan and setout plans are taken from this main development plan, which evolves through the stages of the project. (Versions of the project file are saved at each stage.) However, the individual building types are in separate project files, which also yield the plans and section/elevations of each building.

The images below are a bit rough, as the site and roads have not been finally tweaked.
