"Solid Element Operations" problem?

Okay guys, I encountered another modeling problem today. Here's the deal... I made this townhome which happens to be 3-stories and roofed with spanish tiles. I modeled the town home in a single file. Now, I will be using this town home many times in a single property so that I will have typical units. So instead of copying pasting my units, I had it brought in to a "master file" using the "Hotlink Manager" tool...where I would have my whole site and streets and all that stuff. There are alot of changes going on with my typical units, so I use the technique I mentioned in the previous sentence so that changes will be less troublesome, I simply update it in the Hotlink Manager everytime I make changes. So all the updating works....."but".....all my solid element operations are somewhat "broken", I will upload 2 images. The first one is one of the typical units in its individual file. The second one is how the units appear after I brought them in using the Hotlink Manager. Any suggestions or solution to this problem? Thanks for the continued support!

SEOs only work if you assign them AFTER you place them into the host file.

In other words, you can create an assignment in the original, but that relationship only exists between elements in that original file. You have to re-assign the relationship in the new file.

The problem with that is that you cannot isolate individual elements in a module, so the roof cutting planes become less like a scalpel and more like a cruise missle.

Ofcourse, trim to roof is one of the first tools for this kind of job...but...my intention of using solid element operations for trimming walls to roof was the fact and advantage that I could freely change the roof pitch and plate heights without having to re-trim. Unlike when using the "trim to roof"....when you change pitch, change top plate heights....well your just going to have to undo trims and re-trim it again. If only the trim to roof had the function to keep its trimming properties regardless of changes (similar to how solid element operations work). Maybe this could be a new feature in the new versions/upgrades to come. Definitley a plus.

I think Trim to roof is fine as is - it's an almost permanent cut operation. The problem is that it's so limited, to just roofs.

What we need is a way to "fix" SOEs. A "Make Permanent" button would let us cut out complex forms with SOEs, and then remove the operators and use and re-use the resulting object without the issue this thread started with.( I'd save the operators as a module anyway).

Wait a minute Thomas, You "can" remove your operators and still come out with your resulting "object". You simply hide your operators in a hidden layer and there you have it...then save your object.

And yes, Trim to roof is fine...but...could be better. Imagine being able to change roof pitches and top plate heights, and all the while, the walls under those roofs that were trimmed to that particular roof kept its trimming "rules"...to stay trimmed up to that roof, no matter if you change its pitch or top plate height, it would always be cleanly trimmed up to that roof. (just like how SOEs function).

couldn't you save the house model as a library part? yes, you'll have to manually update the part when you make changes to the model, but at least your SEO's will stick.

As I recall the SEO's are preserved as long as they are in the same module. If you can put the sloping parts of the walls on the same story as the roof then you should be able to get what you want.

You can also use the SEOs on the inserted modules, but as Djordje points out this is not selective. In your case this sould work since you can have holes in the roofs where you don't want the elements cut (like chimneys).

Saving as a library part (the old fashioned way) has it's advantages but can be a bit tricky and doesn't update automatically (or even semi-automatically).

Interesting Matthew, I do recall that my roofs were in another story when I performed the SEOs...I'll try bringing the roofs to the same story as my walls this time...

Well, I've tried it and yes, placing the roofs to the same story as the walls where I executed the SOEs allowed the SOEs to function even when it was brought into to my master file as a module. Thanks again
