Interesting that they seem to have adopted the Renovation Tool add-in from Cadimage/New Zealand Tools. However, it was not completely implemented. As I recall, the same tool could be adapted to be an "Options Manager", specifically for different variations of a new house plan. Cadimage put some thought into this, perhaps their input would be valuable.

<T>Hi all,

Currently working on a renovation project and it's looking like it will have to be built in phases. For ease of output etc I think it would be preferable to keep it all in one file.
Anyone have any advice as to the best way to structure this? I have set up the model using renovation filter...should I just put the various phases of new work on different layers? or just set up a different file for each phase?

Tis a relatively small job so would like to avoid sinking too much time into this!

Thanks,</T>

Have been using AC since version 5.5. I am finishing my projects started in 16, then returning to AC15 (NO RENOVATION TOOL) because the tool has slowed down and made difficult using ArchiCAD. We now have to make three selections for every tool we use because of the renovation tool, which makes for slower project output, and if the selections are not made, every step, output is incorrect and time wasted in figuring out what is going on. This tool is not well thought out and impedes those who are expert in the use of layer sets and layers; especially if there are more than one choices to make as far as the renovation is concerned. If you have Plan A, B, C and D the renovation tool is useless, but not layer sets/layer manipulation which allows for every Plan no matter how major. Can show all these plans in 3d by chosing layer sets for each....try this with the renovation tool.
I can do it in one file with layer sets/layers. That way the work is there for comparison.
Sadly the only (reasonable) way to do phasing is with layers or separate files.

I was very disappointed with the renovation stuff when it came out. I do a lot of phased work and it's pretty much useless to me. It seems like with a better spec to start, and perhaps a little more work, they could have had a kick-a** range of functions rather than a tepid, me too catch up to Revit feature.
You guys are right: design phases would be great (design options would also be great), but the Renovation Filter feature's scope is not this wide by design.

Which I see as a notable design failure. I read this as "This was not a mistake. We intended to screw up."
Let us see what is feasible to design and implement within the allowed time frame.
But this argument may not lead anywhere, our viewpoints are different.

I know Laszlo. I do appreciate the difficulties and constraints of software development. It just bothers me to see a feature that comes close to being so much more than just a me too catch up to Revit, and I can't help but wonder if it was a lost opportunity. The other reason it bothers me is that it suggests that serious phasing and alternates features will be much less likely or much further down the road.

Yes, I know the pain of having a feature that is very close to what we want or need, but not quite there yet.
