Hi Marc
Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm sure that would do it, just not as handy as I was hoping for.
I guess I was really looking for but was not clear about, is a way to not show layers that don't have anything on them (yet).
A simple "toggle" for "in-use" or show all.
That way I get to keep extension for other concepts.
Since in attribute manager it knows what layers are being used, thought that might be easy task for AC instead of having to change their extension names?
But possibly not needed by many.

<T>Isn't there someplace in 12WE>user pref, (or someplace) that can be set to not display layers that are not being used?
Tried different relevant words in AC help "search", which was no help.
Feel kinda dumb, but I can't find it.
Clocked over a 1/2 hr looking, (uncle).
Doesn't exist. You can PURGE unused layers, or not display LOCKED layers.

Thanks Richard!
I'll quit banging my head against the screen now.
And time to "lock-up" (in solitary confinement) some bad boy layers
that I don't want to purge just yet in, this-old.pln.

Bier
Post Script
Well maybe it would be nice to also be able to hide locked layers in the main layers dialog, as a separate option.
Suggesting it be an very obvious button to eliminate confusion, as in modified screen shot.
How do others feel about this?
You could give every layer you wish to hide extension "hidden". Then, with a non hidden layer selected, use the "Filter by extension" tab (in the upper right corner of the layers window).

I think that button stands out like dogs balls. Glad you're not a programmer.

Seriously, I think it's good where it is. There's a lot more that I would like to see before this, like layer hierarchy.
The layer settings dialog is for managing the layers and should not be adapted for more interactive use. The constant use of a modal dialog for such a basic function is a holdover from the early days that needs to be fixed properly, not tweaked.

A layers palette should be introduced that provides quick access to layer settings in a non-modal interface. I could even see it as an extension/redesign of the Quick Options palette into a more comprehensive Display/View palette.

This would allow the settings dialog to be developed into more of a management tool like the other attribute settings dialogs. From what I've seen one of the biggest management problems is mess that is made of layers and combos by users adjusting or adding to them. This is promoted by the fact that every user is constantly going into the layer settings dialog which really should be a management and not an operational tool.
