Use Hotlinked Modules.
A Hotlinked module has a master layer which controls the visibility of all elements in the Hotlinked Module.
So you would place the different design alternatives on different master layers.
See the help files for more info on Hotlinked Modules.

<T>Hi! are there a simple way to keep different design studies under the same model and the same layer combinations we use for the project?
Thanks</T>
