Set type to all types, criteria to the layer that you need.

Set type to all types, criteria to the layer that you need.

After Selecting all the elements in a particular layer, you may need to use EDIT > ELEMENT SETTINGS > EDIT SELECTION SET which makes it possible to edit specific attributes (layers and pencolors) for a collection of dissimilar element types(lines, circles, splines, polylines) simultaneously without affecting any other settings of these elements.
say you wanted to change the pen for all elements on your survey layer.
you can use the find and select to select all elements within a layer (which answers your first question) but then when you try to edit the pen (say through the info box or through a tool settings box for say the lines), it only changes one type of elements (ie only the llines in the above example) and leaves all others intact. you have to use the edit selection set command (also accessed by the funny hammer like symbol in the info box) in order for all different types of elements to be editted at once.
