Still don't understand why you would want walls (or whatever) on hidden layers to affect visibile ones (only instance i can think of is for a hiding layer for Solid Element Operators).

Here's my problem:

I have some walls on an ExistingWallsRetained layer and others on ExistingWallsDemolished. I want to show these with the same linetypes, pens etc so i can have both layers visible to show the building as it is, then turn off ExistingWallsDemolished to show just the walls to be retained.

If i change the intersection numbers, the two layers don't clean up to each other. If they are the same, the retained walls clean up to the invisible demolished walls.

Any suggestions?

<T>Why is that an inactive layer wall shows up as a missing sections at the intersection with an active layer.

In many instances I have a wall pertaining to a hiden layer of a certain alternate. In AC7 once the layer hidden it had not effect on the reality. Now the same hidden layer appears as missing segments in the active wall at intersections.

Since this is such a basic simple level zero bug I honestly wonder if there is any testing going on before GS releases the sofrware?</T>

Have you set the intersection priorities properly in the Layers dialog?

And just to elaborate further for Adalbert: intersection priorities are saved for each layer for each COMBINATION. So, the same layer might have a different priority in other layer combinations where it IS visible. This actually adds flexibility ... and while when this feature first appeared I thought it would create a lot of work changing priorities for the many layers and combos that I have, it has turned out to be a non-issue.
Right--a non-issue as a problem--a BIG issue as a solution to the problem Adalbert was describing. The glitches that occured prior to this development was just one of the small problems (in a sea of big problems) that made me shake my head and continue to draw by hand for many years (while you folks beta tested for me )

I do not know why - but I suppose AC works our the end condition of each wall and then doesn't have to modify it every time a layer set is changed - for speeds sake???

What I do is make the demolition walls with a broken line so the builder can see which is to be demolished. And If 'demolition' is on a lower priority it will not take a wedge out of the remaining wall. Then new walls are put on the same priority as the 'remaining' walls to clean up the main floor plan correectly. It seems to work.

Any suggestions?

In the "Goodies" folder of Addons, at least with 8.1r2b, there is this add-on which may simplify layer intersections for you.

"Intersections in Layer Combinations" Add-On
What does "Intersections in Layer Combinations" do?

As a result of this ArchiCAD Add-On, layer combinations will emulate the visibility-based intersection cleanup logic of earlier ArchiCAD versions.

In ArchiCAD 8 and subsequent versions, intersection cleanup is linked to the Intersection Group Numbers assigned to layers. If the layers of visible elements have different Intersection Group Numbers, the connections of these elements will be not cleaned up.

With this Add-On, you can automatically assign a Group Number of 1 to all visible layers and a Group Number of 0 to all invisible layers registered in Layer Combinations. From then on, activating a Layer Combination will always deliver clean elements intersections. Layer combinations of old projects can then be used as before.

Important: Any Intersection Group Numbers you have already set up in this project will be overwritten.

Notes

* 3D images and Section/Elevations may take longer to calculate, because switching Layer Combinations will typically require an updating process of the 3D model data.
* Changing layers one by one may still result in visible elements without clean intersections.
