Open? You mean show?

lsid wrote:
also, i cannot close the layer from the drop-down layer but have to go to the layer menu.

Close? You mean hide? Right click on something on that layer, choose layers > hide.

In the layer dialog, hit Select All, then click on any open eyeball in the list to hide all the layers, then ctrl click twice on the eyeball of the layer you want to 'see' and hit OK.

The drop down list is only for changing the layer an element will be assigned to - it's not for layer visibility.

Chuck a please into your posts. It doesn't take much and you'll get a much better response. We're all friends around here
Nothing against the toolbar (I add stuff there, too), but for speed, you might try to get used to keeping one hand on the keyboard and the other on the mouse ... Ctrl-L brings up Layers.

(Aside: note that the Layers dialog is resizable ... I usually have mine stretched to fill the entire vertical space available to avoid or minimize scrolling.)

Richard's suggestion to the original poster of the QuickLayers palette (which I have mapped to ctrl-shift-L, for ex.) is the fastest way to get what he wants. Click an element on the layer of interest and click the 'hide all others' button.
karl

i also try to keep the layers dialogue at full height vertically, however there is a very annoying mac bug that reduces the vertical height of the dialogue by about 2 lines every time it is opened until it reaches its default size!!!

i have reported this on occasions, but haven't yet seen a resolution!
Amazing! I hadn't noticed this before. I had to go and test it and sure enough, the dialog crept up and up as I opened it over and over. This should be fixed.
