I would certainly recommend the GDL Handbook (I do have a copy).

But if you are just starting out, I think that the Cookbook is a better initial guide. Once you have a basic understanding and you are still interested, rather than scared, then buy the GDL Handbook without reservation.

Just my two cents...

<T>Hello everyone,

I'm trying to learn a bit more of GDL and I would like to know if it's possible to view the 3d coding of a slab (saved as an object). I made an irregular polygon and would like to use it as subroutine on my 3d script but when I open the 3d script this is all I get:
I don't know what the binary is but I don't see here anything that creates the 3d object. Can anyone help me please?</T>

I'm not sure how you are saving your object, but if you are using 16 as in your signature, the 'save selection as object' defaults to saving a text (not binary as in your post) version of the object whether saved from 2D or 3D.

You can also drag elements from the plan window into the 3D script and the script to create the element will automagically appear in the script as shown in the attached screenshot.

Hi Karl,

Thanks for the help, it worked wonderfully! I have the GDL cookbook but it's not very update and I read there that dragging did not work on mac ... is there any good beginner guide that you can suggest?

Cheers!

Glad that worked for you. The Cookbook 3 and 4 is still great, I think - but a lot of new things have been added to AC and GDL since then. It's the best source I know of for learning the basics.

The only other guide I know of is one I have never seen, so am not able to recommend - Andrew Watson's GDL Handbook:
Good to hear your recommendation for the GDL Handbook, Erich! Was hoping someone who had a copy would chime in. <E>😉</E>

How did I miss this? Yes the GDL Handbook is excellent. Good material well organized and professionally presented. I recommend it highly.

Hi, I got the GDL handbook and I'm using it right now - At least all the information I need is in one place and not scattered, and explains pretty basic stuff (and more advanced too that I have no interest in learning!).

About dragging the shape into the 3D window it becomes humanly unreadable! So I guess I'm back to prisms!

Thanks guys!
