In addition to the parts you have modeled, add a Slab with the ID of wallhole that follows the outline of the door and window when saving the elements as a door or window. This slab will not show, but will define the opening in the wall. In the Help files see: Virtual Building > Parametric Objects > Graphic Creation of Custom Objects > Saving Custom-Shape Holes or Niches.

<T>I have made a custom combined window & door (which I have saved as a window and inserted into an archicad model.) The window is not the same height as the door and, as a result, when I inserted the object into the model the wall underneath disappeared (see attachment)- is there a way to make the wall wrap around the object so that I don't have the gap under the window?

Thanks
...and the other key point for the method outlined by David is that you must select options and be sure that you are saving the GDL object as Editable script. This is stated in the docs, but has often been easily missed by folks. Binary objects ignore the special ID names of 'wallhole' and 'wallniche'.
