<T>I have a kitchen sink that I'm putting into an island. I've done the island as a slab (countertop and base different slabs) and put a sink library part into it, but the counter is showing through the sink. What's a good way to do this? I cannot seem to get the counter to cut out around the sink..</T>

why don't you just cut a hole in the countertop (slab)?
Otherwise use a different sink, I know a particular sink has a problem with SEO. After that do a SEO with Upwards extrusion.

I see, I was doing the wrong extrusion type (downward). I'm pretty new to SEO's so I have trouble identifying what exactly to do (which is operator vs. target, etc). I find myself figuring it out by trial by error...

Yep. That's what I'd do.

If you encounter a situation where it's really important, you can have the subject "inherit the attributes of the operator" That should change the slab edge at the cut to be the same as the sink, getting rid of the annoying flashing between materials when moving around in GDL.

In the image below the sink is from Cadimage's Cabinet Builder library, and uses SEO with upwards extrusion to penetrate the bench top. I have no idea how they have done it as I don't have a clue about GDL, but it appears that they somehow have an element slightly bigger than the sink bowl itself which can be used as the perimeter of the SEO Operator to form the cut out.

Nice.

Yes there is a prism bigger than the bowls (the size and shape of the required cut out) that is concealed in an "if GLOB_CONTEXT > 40 and GLOB_CONTEXT < 50 then....." statement.

This will only activate when there is a Solid Element Operation in progress (GLOB_CONTEXT > 40 and < 50).
Otherwise it will not be seen.
So it can perform the cut when you do an SEO but otherwise is invisible.

Was discussed recently here ...
The last one has a sample object I made using this method.
