Your best bet would be to add them into the doors & windows you are using. It would require some GDL work.

More than a little GDL if the idea is to add these to the standard library parts which are marvels of complexity.

The really simple approach is to use beams since they subtract themselves from the walls automatically. Of course they can't be linked/grouped to the window so this creates more elements to manage. With the profiled beams you can even shape the sills and lintels if desired.

Before beams and SEOs I used to use a window part that includes an empty opening with a sill and lintel. The opening is then matched to the actual window. The GDL is pretty straight forward for simple shapes, but it still creates an extra element to manage.

Until we have an assembly editor (or at least the ability to group doors and windows), I think the beams work best.

<T>Hi

Does a door know what type of wall it is in? Or can it find out?

The use I would have for this is if I know that a door is in a masonry wall then I know that it needs a lintol and this could be an automatically generated parameter for the door when placed in the wall.

Any ideas?

TIA

This is a link to a page in ArchicadWiki which lists all the Wall GDL Global Parameters that are available for use in the scripts of Windows/Door to get the state of the Wall they are placed into:

<LINK_TEXT text="http://archicadwiki.com/Global_GDL_Para ... 44036fd566">http://archicadwiki.com/Global_GDL_Parameters?highlight=%28Category%29%7C%28TechNotes%29%7C%28FrontPage%29%7C%28Bugs%29%7C%28CategoryGdl%29#head-e789aeec980e7732ff96289bdfa94a44036fd566</LINK_TEXT>

Your Window/Door may inquire the Material of the Wall, or the Fill Type of the Wall or any of its skins, etc. and then set parameters accordingly to achieve the desired result.

one of the features of the cadimage wall framing tool that i love for its simplicity and vision!

unfortunately it's solely an aspect of their timber framing tool and so isn't as far reaching as this kind of element could be. but it does highlight a far better (in my opinion) door/window methodology: that the building components forming the hole in the wall be removed from the door/window element placed <S></S>inside<E></E> of it.
