Thanks for the reply.... yes, you have answered my question. I am disapointed, you would think the fireplace object would be built like a window or door object. Cutting holes to match the firebox sounds kind of messey, not only in matching 3D holes, but also in wall holes showing as windows in 2D with fireplace object in same location. Whole things sounds really messey.

<T>What is the proper object / preference setting that allows the firebox opening of a fireplace to show in the 3D window. The fireplaces in the library cut the wall just fine in the 2D plan, but not when seen in the 3D window the fireplace opening is concealed by the wall skin with the hearth sticking out. If the wall is moved to the center of the fireplace the firebox opening shows, but you can see the wall passing through the firebox beyound the opening. If the fireplace only is viewed in the 3D window all looks fine.

I have tried every adjustment I can think of with no luck. I must be missing something, what might it be.</T>

Sounds like what you're looking for is more of the process of placing a fireplace. The "proper" way to place the object is by placing a door/window in the wall in order to create the opening. It would be great if the fireplace would create its own opening in the wall, but I think the way to do that would be to either save it as a door/window or SEO it from the wall with a downward extrusion once placed (if modeled appropriately).

Hope this helps (and that I've answered what you were asking).
Okay, I spent some time today (Saturday), working with window and door holes for the fireplace openings. In combination with the fireplace object the hole objects work pretty well.

I was unable to create a segmental arch with the window hole tool. No matter what values I entered I always got a roman arch. However, the door hole tool was more intuitive and provided the correct segmental arch on the first try.

Thanks for your suggestion
