How do you optimize a 3D object?

The more seats I add to an auditorium, the heavier the scene gets in 3D and I was wondering if there is a way to optimize the 3D objects.

Some objects have a level of detail setting. Some even can be controlled by model view options.

Sometimes just having some layer combinations that exclude layers are enough for keeping things workable.

Modelport looks promising and should help.
I've never tried it.
