TIBOR -

Jay is correct, most of windows in the SE9 library have problems.

Here is today's example: a typical Architects day.

After busting my butt all last week to prepare a window package that my client could read, using the the Calculate Window Legend, I get a call this morning telling me to omit all the arched top french casement windows (W2 Arched Top SE9) and replace them with less expensive arch top single casement windows. This should be easy I thought to myself, by using the new SE9 ability to exchange parameters using the eye dropper and syringe on the window icon, I would just find the correct window type, exchange the parameters and then just change the sizes for the various windows.

However, when I went to W Arched Cas SE9 and checked the parameters under "Wall Type" I found there was no entry for "Shoulder Height". Unlike the top of the W2 Arched Top SE9, the top of the W Arched Cas SE9 cannot produce an arch top, only a circle top.

Looking further, I investigated the W Eyebrows Fix SE9, hoping that I could just fake the fact that it was fixed. But here I find the head of the window is not an arch top, but and elliptical top. An even more expensive window then the french arch tops I was asked omit.

I am going nuts.

I have looked through all the casement windows and I cannot find a single casement arch top window. Maybe it's there and I have missed it. That brings me to the point of organization; a casement window is a casement window, whether it has an arch top, circle top, flat top or no top, it is still a casement window. ALL casement windows should be in the casement window file, all awning windows should be the awing window file, all fixed windows should be in the fixed window file, etc. Don't worry about the shapes, it the frames that distinguish the window types and how they gang together. If you have window configurations with multiple sash types, duplicate the icon and put the configuration in multiple files with the same frame type. Make it easy for the user, don't make the user search through 70 different window icons looking and hoping it might be here or there, or somewhere he hasn't looked. If it is a casement, then it is in the casement folder, and that is it, end of story, no where else to look.

Also, windows should be organized in order of complexity, the simplest frame type first, the more complex at the end. Once again shape makes no difference, a single casement, should be followed by single casements with different tops, then french casements should follow and then french casements with different tops, etc.

I am at a lost to figure out how to do a single casement arch top window.

Would be nice to have this feature. I am fairly new to ArchiCAD and have used the Special Edition library on all of my projects to this point. I wouldn't know if other regular ArchiCAD9 features that could save time are missing. I know it's not easy to convert a plan to use the regular library elements. Are there any side by side comparisons of features that can help new users choose which library to use?

Thanks,
The se9 library parts have more features than the standard library. I use it regularly; down side is the wall thickness feature. I'm sure there must be a setting for frame = thickness, but it's hidden pretty well.

This library is from GS and is the update/replacement for the standard library.

Definitely consider contacting GS US support with questions. But, we might be able to help you more here if your question were more specific: which window/door doesn't work for you - and perhaps a screenshot of what is showing up wrong in plan? (My frame depths match my wall depths out of the box on the doors and windows I've tried from SE9.)

Cheers,
One would think so, but I haven't found it either. I assume that it is not available for wood doors (it's there as a check box for D1 Metal). This is a major pain and really should be added. I assume that there are some complications making it work in all circumstances (ie various wall types & geometries, trim conditions, etc.)

Which doors have you tried? I can't find any setting for it in any of the wood doors. It also appears to be off by default in the metal doors. I am wondering how yours have been working "out of the box".

This is a common approach, but is not used in the SE library. As a GDL programmer I prefer the check box. Resetting the parameter to 0 is sooo 90's.

Attached is a screen shot of two D.H. windows in a 12" thick wall.

#1. I placed by using the default frame depth right out of the box. The frame is 4.5". An extension jamb is added automatically but, the frame does not mathe the wall thickness.

#2. I manually changed the frame depth to 12" prior to placing in the wall. This matches the wll thickness.

I have noticed other anomilies as well, such as: changing the construction method from edge to reveal and then back again. If you do this. the brick moulding automatically offsets in the opposite direction when going from edge to reveal then won't correct upon changing back to edge. I do 90% remodel/renovation design which does make a difference when going from as-built to new.

Thanks,
This thread is similar to my comment last week when I posted that I was unable to make a drywall return using the SE9 window library. If you reduce the widow frame width to less then the wall width then a jamb extension is automatically applied to the jamb frame. Setting the jamb extension to zero, "a sooo reto 90's workaround", causes ArchiCAD to crash; the solution is .001. This, however, only minimizes the jamb extension, it does not eliminate it.

This seems strange to me as the SE9 library was billed as a USA library. A drywall jamb return with a wood sill and apron is probably the most common interior window finish used in USA production housing. In my custom work, many clients like 5/8" drywall with a 2" bullnose return used in combination with a 2x6 exterior wood stud wall. I can't do that with with the SE9 library.

My question is this: why doesn't Graphisoft hire USA consultants to design USA libraries? I am not being sarcastic here, have you ever look through the objects library, half the crap in it I have never seen, and half the window objects are not in any USA catalog I have ever used. My advice to Graphisoft, just call up an Anderson window rep, get a catalog, and copy it. You will have 99% of all USA window configurations in your hands. It's really not that hard to do, a no brainer, if you just try.
