Tips for Library Management in BIMcloud – Outdated Objects and Updates

Hi all,

We work on multiple projects using shared libraries hosted on BIMcloud, and I’m wondering how others manage outdated objects and object updates over time. Since we’re an interior architecture firm, we frequently use manufacturer-specific furniture objects. Over time our BIMcloud library has grown into a bit of a mess - with overlapping objects, unclear versioning, and outdated content still lingering around.

Some typical challenges we face:

- Objects in our library on BIMcloud become outdated, but can’t be removed from the library without affecting existing projects
- New versions of objects are uploaded, but it becomes unclear which ones are in use and which should be phased out

I’m particularly interested in:

Best practices for library versioning
How you handle cleanup without breaking historical project files
Any tips for automation or documentation workflows

We’re working in Archicad 28.

I’d really appreciate any insights, tips, or links to relevant discussions!

For your old objects, you can make them 'obsolete'.

You still keep this object in your library, but you will no longer be able to select it an place it as a new object.

Already placed objects will still work as normal when you select them in your model.

You just can't browse your library and find this object any more.

I also re-name the object - i.e. "object 1 - obsolete".

Don't 'save as' as this will create a new object with a new GSID.

Just re-name them in your operating system file browser.

You can take it further and migrate your old objects to new ones.

Then you no longer need to keep the old objects in your library at all and any already place old objects will automatically become the new ones.

But this can be tricky if you have parameters in your objects that also need to be transferred in the migration script.
