Hi David,

thank you for that, that's great. I had a look previously and remember something about ArchiCAD will adapt the size to fit the application, so if I create a garage door, will it adapt it to fit either a single or double size door for example? Can you still change the surface material?

kind regards,

<T>Hi all,

I'm trying to look into creating a custom garage door. I read that someone made one out of slab? I would have thought the wall tool. I've had a look around but I'm just wondering the best way to do this? Do you follow the same steps for a standard door or kitchen cabinets?

Sorry, basic instructions please as I'm still fairly new on ArchiCAD.

Thanks for any help.</T>

Geblues:

The custom doors are built using Slabs because the door is built laying horizontally, then ArchiCAD rotates the door to place it in a Wall.

In the help files: to create an entire custom door see: Elements of the Virtual Building > Parametric Objects > Graphic Creation of Custom Library Parts and Components > Saving Custom-Shape Doors or Windows. To create a custom door leaf see: Elements of the Virtual Building > Parametric Objects > Graphic Creation of Custom Library Parts and Components > Creating Custom Components for Doors, Windows, Curtain Walls. Creating a custom leaf means that the other door parameters will be available; an entire custom door will not have the extra features of the ArchiCAD Library doors.
Gabrielle:

ArchiCAD will adjust the size of the leaf to fit the opening, but the entire leaf will get stretched. So if the original leaf size is 8' x 8' with a 1'x1' window in it, and the size is changed to 16'x8', the window will become 2'x1'. The Surface material remains part of the original leaf, so cannot be changed.
If you save your slabs as a door object (rather than a door panel) you will be able to control the materials as the parameters for these will be created automatically.

Model your slabs to include the frames and door panel (even handles if you want - as much detail as you require) with the underside of the slab at zero level and the height of the slabs above.
Zero will be the outside surface when you save as a door object.
The slabs will automatically be rotated when save as a door object.
Another good trick is to model the slabs with what would be the bottom centre of the door object at the drawing origin.

It will stretch but everything will stretch proportionally. So if you change the width to be twice as wide the frames, handles, etc., will be twice as wide as well.

So pretty much you will create a custom door object for each size (unless they are only very small size changes where you may not notice the frames getting bigger or smaller).
