Select the Door, go to its Settings Dialog.
In the Marker Settings panel, on its Marker Geometry page, you will see the Marker Position or the Extension Line parameter controls this.

Thanks for your reply. I am using Archicad start edition and I tried to do what you said but cound't figure it out. would it be too much to ask for some screenshots?

Hey again

no need to make the screenshots as I already figured it out. the problem was I had the 2d door opening representation angle to 90 degrees which made the symbol overlap the dimension marker.
