Rob - do you know if the static IP address issue cited in the ArchicadWiki Network article you referenced be fixed by using a Client Update Service like that provided by DynDNS.com?

The Dynamic DNS service consists of the user (you) creating a host name and having that host name updated when your IP address changes. This way whenever you want to connect you use the host and not the IP.

Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott,

Yes, that is the recommended method if you do not have a static IP. See this Wiki article, which has described the DynDNS method since 13 was delivered:
<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.archicadwiki.com/Teamwork/Bi ... n_Pointers">http://www.archicadwiki.com/Teamwork/BimServerRemoteConnection#A-_Using_the_same_Domain_Name_string_without_having_a_Static_Public_IP_Address_.28recommended_only_for_temporary_testing_of_TW2.29:_Domain_Pointers</LINK_TEXT>

Interestingly, someone has edited that article to say that using a dynamic domain name is recommended only for testing. I disagree. I do not know of any problems with using it for production. The key is that you MUST use the host name assigned at all times - local and remote - so that libraries will be properly found. Later in that article, it explains how to edit the local hosts file so that the DynDNS domain name can be used locally.

Cheers,
Karl

PS The link above depends on the text of the section heading ... which someone might edit again. Just in case, here is the article itself:
I really only want to be an architect.... So I went and signed up for the dynDNS stuff... only to have my router say TEST FAILED...

All I want to do is have a person at a remote site be able to tap into my BIMServer and see the files and make some comments...

I've read the two articles, but both say things like "there's way too many different routers to list step by step instructions"

So maybe someone's had experience with a NETGEAR WNR 2000 on a MAC system to offer up some suggestions...

As below, working ok over my LAN...

The pdf for your router is here. <S></S>http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4448<E></E>

Section 4-6 or page 70 has steps to get your router working with dynDNS.org Also, looking over the default setup, you are going to have to open ports in your firewall for that the bimserver uses.
