topic Re: BIM Server 'location' in Teamwork & BIMcloud

Hi Karl-
I did finally get the BIM server connected to the right place (I had the BIM control looking at the server, instead of the D-drive), but the library is not working...I think that is the same issue, the location is calling out for my server, and not the D-drive.

Do I need to uninstall and reinstall, pointing to the correct drive? I cannot see/find an 'easy' fix for this. (Failed to upload container) is the message...(I'm working on a screen shot, but it's not uploading)

BIM Server 'location'

<T>Regarding where to place the BIM Server...we have been working in solo projects, so when I first setup the BIM server, I put it on our server---a stand alone machine, used for file storage, project storage, etc. We have always worked across the network to our files on the 'server'.

So, when it came time to start using AC13, I naturally set the office server as the 'Bim Server'....should I have made this MY workstation, instead of our file server?

Reason I'm questioning it, is I am now having problems opening up projects to 'share'. I am getting error messages that the project cannot be shared. We are all updated with
Version Lang Build Platform Type
13 USA 3259 Win FULL
and BIM server hotfixes/updates had been installed on the server machine.

thanks-
Kathleen</T>

Hi Kathleen,

Your server (assuming enough memory/etc) is the place for the BIM Server to be for a small office like yours. (Very large offices might have several server machines.)

The message about sharing may have more to do with access rights I suspect.

Can you post a screenshot of the error message(s)? It might be easiest to Skype screenshare with me or tech support otherwise...

Best,
Not sure I'm following, Kathleen.

You have a monitor (or can screenshare) to work on the server computer I assume. Are you saying that when you installed BS on the server machine, that you did not point it to folders on the local (server) drive for projects and libraries? (You would not want a circular 'share' from the server.)

Using BS, you'll never be aware of any drive name or letter, such a D. (Hotlinked modules or xref'd dwgs or placed PDFs - etc - might still refer to a network drive though. If they do, then you'll have to use a VPN or do other tricks to work on a shared project from home or on the road.)

The only time that BS installation and use is fully automatic is if either (a) you will never access projects over the internet or (b) if you intend to access over the internet, you use a VPN. Any other situation requires some manual steps that are in the Wiki, but which most often requires a staff IT person or a rent-a-nerd (consultant).

Maybe someone else has an idea of what's going on in your situation. Or, you can contact me offline.

Best,
