For speed and productivity, it of course always pays to use the right tools.

What constitutes the 'right tools', given learning curves, depends on how often one does the things that require those tools.

There is a common subset of things that Photoshop and Piranesi can both do, but that subset is pretty small and not really related to the point of either product. (And...Piranesi is not a substitute for Photoshop: I agree with Dwight that every AC user must have Photoshop [Elements] and at least modest skills there.)

For photorealistic images from LW in AC or Artlantis or wherever, you can outrageously quicly punch the image up with entourage in Piranesi faster than in any other application IMHO because of two simple facts about Piranesi: (1) it allows any image (or 3D object) to be a cutout that casts shadows and (2) cutouts are placed to scale anywhere in the scene visually and quickly, including ducking them behind the model. You just cannot do that in Photoshop without tedious masking and manual scaling and transformation. In Piranesi, you can quicly populate a scene with trees, shrubs, signage, people, vehicles, etc.

I would never take the time to place such entourage in ArchiCAD itself as billboards or even in Photoshop.

Many things are not worth modeling - for example, ornate plaster mouldings in interiors. How would you display these in an ArchiCAD rendering? You would have to tediously create a material for each wall that had the moulding - unique to that wall height - that includes the photoimage of the moulding, etc. In Piranesi, you just paint the image of the moulding at the desired location, to scale and following perspective - all masking, scaling, etc is automatic.

For non-photorealism, I agree with Dwight, and have said so: many (most?) of the images in the Piranesi gallery are unappealing to me as 'art'. But, this is a reflection of the artistic abilities of the user, not the software. With a pressure sensitive tablet (Wacom), and some artistic ability, Piranesi has a huge set of tools to offer the image specialist.

Just a few more 'pro Piranesi' thoughts. <E>😉</E>
i have a client that wouldl like me to do some schematic renderings and really like the look of water color or a hand marker rendering. Is this possible with ArchiCAD, lightworks, Artlantis? If so can some one give me some setting so i can test this out. i have posted an example of the style they wanted...really in a time crunch on this one.</T>

A good watercolor or a bad one?

If you have photoshop, visit the "photoshop actions" site - just google that.
Photoshop actions are pre-recorded macros that use the crude photoshop filters in subtle ways for unique results. there are many actions there for free. it is fun.

Photoshop does have a watercolor filter but it is best to combine it with another filter so it is not so obvious or: apply the watercolor filter several times with small effect rather than one huge distortion all at once.

b.trenga wrote:
Hey guys,
i have a client that wouldl like me to do some schematic renderings and really like the look of water color or a hand marker rendering.

Based on your example, you really want to use Piranesi which can acheive exactly that appearance...once you learn to use it and assuming you are a bit artistic yourself.

Nothing will achieve that automatically.

Photoshop filters can give a nice look - but not the one you've shown, nor one that is particularly artistic unless you do a bit of masking and manual brush work too.

Another tip from a Piranesi Expert, Susan Sorger, is to insert hand-painted entourage - people/trees/sky - into a computer-painted image, as the viewer will latch onto the handwork of those elements and easily believe that the entire image was hand-painted. (Susan sells libraries of her hand-painted entourage, if her style happens to fit your needs. Your image shows marker people rather than painted people, though.)

There is a 30 day trial version of Piranesi here:
<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.informatix.co.uk/piranesi/do ... demo.shtml">http://www.informatix.co.uk/piranesi/downloads/windows/demo.shtml</LINK_TEXT>
along with some tutorials/etc. (The full product comes with 100's of textures and cutouts - not present in the demo download.)

Informatix gallery here:
http://www.informatix.co.uk/piranesi/gallery.shtml

Also, visit the Piranesi forums and user gallery (ranging from really, really bad to pretty good stuff) here:
http://www.informatixsoftware.com/forums/

Because the 'art' part is the user him/herself - you cannot judge the software by the images, but merely use them to suggest possibilities.

A true 'wet' watercolor is not possible in Piranesi though. (Corel Painter, and some other software, allow you to adjust the wetness of the paper and the drying time of your brush to determine the spread of washes, blending of colors, etc.)

(Every effect in your sample image is possible in Piranesi...in fact, that image looks more computer-manipulated than hand-painted based on the sky and the uniformity of the grass gradient.)

Have fun with it,
Yes, that method is the standard/fast way to get a non-photorealistic look... it just isn't the marker look that you asked for in your original post.
Piranesi is the hero..but still here i've learned another method from this forum..is to render in LWRDE and the same view with a sketch rendering engine " no shadows, no vectorial hatching" and have booth in Photoshop and just add the Sketch as an " overlay" layer..and a marvellous view would be there.. or even some mix with erase tool in photoshop really marvellous and easy !!
thanx for the all the guys here that showed us this method !!

ok so this is what i have so far, now keep in mind i really only had one day to do this project from start to finish. i.e. design, build model, and render final image. I could not get a water color look that i like using light works and photoshop so i did a combination of light works, sketch render and photoshop. Let me know what you guys think.

yeah like i mentioned before very simple
take your light works rendering ( make sure its a saved view so its the same as the next step) and bring it to photoshop

take both of these images into photoshop and make sure the sketch image its on the bottom layer so every thing looks more artistic and faded. then add the light works image on top of that set to about 50% opacity, then fill in your back round with the actual site images also set to 50% so it all matches

That rendering looks great. I had a client want the same style for their project. I rendered it in Artlantis and did a sketch rendering in AC. I did as you, in that I layered the images. I put the colored image on bottom and the sketched image on top. I ran the water color filter in PS on the colored image
then used the texture filter on the colored image to make it look like it was on canvas. I then used the eraser @ 50% trans to erase the sketch rendering
till I got the effect I wanted.

This is great stuff guys. I have been advocating this approach for a long time and it's great to see such good work. I get tired sometimes of all the obsession over radiosity, caustics and all the other stuff that it takes to make "photo" renderings that don't work (no matter how good they are) for schematic phase presentations. It is refreshing to see renderings that begin to approach the artistic quality of hand techniques.

I agree, i mean photo rendering have a great use with completed design and for marketing purposes. For S.D and early on these rendering do not give the client the idea that the design is finished. This gives a great hand sketched feeling and even if all the details are not worked out you cant tell.
