Imbeded renderings Vs Manual Renderings

I have more of a question than a problem. In our office we like to put a nice Kool Nor Sketch on the cover sheet of the project. This gives some continuity over the years from the pencil days when my boss was young.

When I place the sketch as a drawing it takes far longer to generate than if I just render the image and save it as a Jpeg. I have noticed that for most of the drawings I place on the sheets they take much longer to generate than just going to the drawing. Is there a reason for the slowdown and is there a way I can fix it, to save time when updating the set.

The reason is, ArchiCAD does the rendering every time you update. While this is OK if something has changed, it is not as you need to quickly print it or shoot a PDF, and the rendering takes longer than whoever is waiting is prepared to wait.

So, when the current version is finished, better replace the live rendering view with the rendered image. It is better for the archiving purposes, too.

I am going through the files and making the change. It is wierd that it takes so much longer to do the same task as an automated setup rather than the manual one.

The other issue is that when the drawing update is doing the rendering it uses like twice the ram compared to when I do the rendering myself.

I have noticed when you print a PDF it is a smaller file size if the renderings are JPEGS rather that updating imbeded renderings. It does also depend upon the resolution of the renderings which I can't seem to make higher than about 120-150 dpi otherwise the files get too big to email.

Why not just set your rendering drawings to manual update?

Previously I have been setting the drawings to manual regeneration. The problem is that when the time comes to update the drawings because of a design change. The drawings take most of the day to update or all night.

Good lord. Do you have every unneeded layer turned off, including all interiors? That's far too long!

We have some Highly detailed homes and if you want to see the details of the space you have to have all the layers for the room on. Some projects I can render the entire house and some I have to go room by room and turn off everything outside of the field of vision. I am really looking forward to when they make ArchiCAD 64 bit.

Well that is definitely a nice rendering indeed, but I am sure all that detail and all those trees would slow down the best computers around today. I would recommend using the marquee to very carefully crop out anything not included in each 3D view and save your renderings for lunchtimes or overnight!
