I, too, am but a simple Draughtsman, but I'm sure you'd have a good time here. Architectural practices are many and varied, from small, one-man-bands (or slightly larger like ours, with only 2 Archs and 4 Draughtees) to large commercial practices with offices all over the country (eg. Jasmax, Chow Hill, have a look at the www.architecturenz.net site, linked from the NZIA website) and if you're any good I'm sure you'd be snapped up.

~archiben, self proclaimed architectural nomad, has probably seen more Architectural practices than me around the country (my last move between practices was 4 years ago, and just across the road...) and might be able to offer some advice.

you're unlikely to have much success finding an ARB registered practice, although there are plenty of poms in this part of the world: i can't remember whether you just have to work under an ARB registered <S></S>architect<E></E> and that will suffice?

my opinion: just do it mate. registration can happen later! (i've never actually got around to it yet - too much to see in and do! ). there seems to be a good architectural climate at the moment, although i get a feeling that there needs to be a bit of a crash just to level things out a bit. from a construction point of view though, standards and materials are far lower and looser than the UK. that's not a negative criticism: just that you won't get the kind of exposure to construction techniques that you will eventually need to know for UK practice . . .

on the whole, i'm liking it here. i can design with a freedom i never had in the UK . . . (and that's more important than the client getting cold because kiwi's have never heard of insulation, right?! )
I have been a Beta tester and discovered a number of minor issues in imaging.

Since I see the promo of Archicad 11 is well underway, here are things to look for that won't get much press, but delight me:

1: Open GL: responds to the transparency setting for materials. Yay.

2: What were formerly exclusively color shaders can now also be employed as displacement shaders. This is great! A brick shader with shadowed relief!!

3: Since i do so much curvy stuff, I'm relieved that the wall tool can now make smooth curved profiles instead of a buzzillion short segments.

RE: More Book: Depending on whether or not i get this next huge public art job, i might be doing a new small electronic book based in Archicad 11 that revisits the basics with new techniques that only seminar attendees learn because they were developed since the LightWorks book was written - almost two years ago, now. The light cone reigns!
