i am doing exterior site renderings with multiple buildings now, but i think this will pertain to all my renderings - interior, exterior, where ever

how do you get the shadows cast to be less intense.. (lighter, more transparent)

i have experimented with the sun settings, and the rendering settings
and it doesn't seem to make a difference...

some objects left in the shadows are lost in the image

Increase ambient light level.
Add extra manual sun object to fill shadows.

With the help of Dwight's book I finally managed to get this done within minutes...

Didn't know about the good results one can get with Lightworks.
