Model disappears behind "curtain," ...reappears in

It's as if an invisible plane cuts off our model as we rotate through it.

The model fragments, walls peel off and disappear, then the whole thing vaporizes. Poof. Gone. When we rotate backwards it sometimes reappears in the reverse order of disappearance.

This is an interesting and artistic phenomenon, ...but fatal to presentations to our more serious clients who always seem to expect walls on all the sides of their buildings, ...etc.

The problem is in Open GL where we often edit in the 3D window.

This afternoon we will be showing rendered views and must sacrifice manipulating the model itself, and the tours of the interiors etc.

Sadly, it's often the tours and walk-throughs that sell the designs.

We're using ArchiCAD 10, Intel Mac, 4GB Ram.

That is a camera front clipping plane. Occurs in other applications as well.

But I'm not sure if you can edit it directly in ArchiCAD.

Are you sure the scale of your scene is correct? Or do you have, by chance, a very large environment?

I don't think it is a clipping plane issue. If it is the solution would be very simple the thing is that the so called apparent clipping plane is directionally oriented. When we look at the model from the north everything is ok and we can get right up to the house. however as soon as you rotate the camera towards the south the plane extends out away from the camera proportunately to the orientation of the camera to the compass. Then if you save the image or do a rendering everything shows up just fine without the clipping plane. The other thing is that it is not just in one file and it is not something that happens with one computer. I am just thankful that it is only happening in as few files as it is otherwise life would be much more difficult.

This may be obvious to you already, but have you checked this? It's easy to toggle on by accident.

This has come up before, a search found this thread. I thought it was a graphics card issue, but user "Chipo" seemed to find a different solution.

Thank you for the link to the other thread. It seems that by resizing the light cone it fixed the problem for Chipo however on our project we haven’t gotten that far yet. I only have about 5 hours invested in the project we are having problems with it is a simple massing for a client just a basic layout of a house. I think there is less than 100 elements in the entire model and that includes the roofs, walls, slabs and objects I never even got far enough into the project to do lighting.

Yes that was one of the first things I tried. I also tried turning off the mesh even deleting it all together since that is the only element of any real size, but no luck. Hopefully the problem will fix itself before the project becomes an active project. Since that seems to be par for this problem. I am almost thinking about starting the entire project over and seeing if it is correlated to something other than the objects in that file.

This might be superfluous, but there IS a setting that can make trouble for OPen Gee-eL (to use its Star Trek name) views.

That dang light cone can be set to show.
And does it ever! Shows opaque!

I had this same problem with a with an NVIDIA MX440 card. As soon as I rotated into the northern hemisphere from where I was standing the entire 3D model would vaporize as I rotate. I just tried switching to an NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS OC, 256 MB GDDR3, AGP 8x/4x slot. I still have a similar problem but now a much smaller portion of the northern hemisphere disappears - only within a hemisphere up to about 5' away from my 'eye' now vaporizes and I can still see everything beyond. The disappearing portion of my hemisphere starts with a radius of 0" when facing directly either east or west and gradually expands to about that 5' dimension as I face directly north. It's an improvement but still disappointing after spending $269 at Best Buy. Southern hemispere no glitches.

Anyone else have a suggestion? I tried adjusting screen resolution to no affect.

Clipping planes can also be related to the size of the scene. Suppose you have a large terrain. Then the clipping and Z-buffer (hidden surfaces) might suffer from precision problems.

I would also try to remove geometry from the scene (in a backup file) and see if it is related to objects in the model.

There is and object that makes trouble in 3d. Find&destroy it.

My sugestion is to delete half of work and see if the rest works in 3d. If it doesn't work that means the bad object is still there - delete half of the rest and so on until you find it.

If this doesn't help, try to copy-paste your work in a new document.

Instead of deleting, switch on and off layers, and/or use the marquee on half the model, then another half ... and so on ...

Although, the marquee is not always the good thing to do, as some object lose parts of itself when in marquee (for example, the cars from Transportation library)
