My MVO had gotten switched!! I don't know why I didn't think to check that first - and yes, it was the same case for the railing as well. I'm attaching an image, in case this happens to anyone else.
<S></S>
Thanks a lot Barry! <E></E>

<R>Hello all,

I don't know why this is happening - even though my sliding doors are supposed to have glass panels, it shows as metal in the 3D window. Andrailings are supposed to be aluminium, but they're displayed as glass.
Help please!

Best regards,
In the Model View Option settings, check the Level Of Detail for the doors and windows.
It may be set to 'Simplified' rather than 'Full'.
I am fairly sure that may be the solution for your doors and windows.

There is a similar setting in the MVO for railing options - although I am less sure if that is the problem there.
