I didn't mean to say 'Artlantis R is better than Lightworks' or whatever, it depends on what you do, etc. I just wanted to point out that radiosity in Artlantis R is not only a tool to make fancy drawings, but that its main effect is substantially reducing the time it takes to set up a picture. That, and the ease with which you drop objects and edit textures, makes it so fast that for moderately complex models I would say it is much faster than Lightworks within ArchiCAD --which of course also goes for the study pictures in your design process.

Ignacio, I've never try to prove that lightworks is better than ArtR either (I may be an opportunist but not a madman) just want to be objective. Back to the quote - honestly I haven't got a chance to test it with really complex models yet, but in ordinary two stories house + sourandings it works just fine. In ArtR you need to redo all the materials and lights, put some extra objects, vegetation - don't tell me you do this in a blink of eye, what's more - when you pump up reflections, radiosity, light contribution than ArtR need adequately more time to deal with it. I hardly ever let my final LW scenes cook longer than 30 min, WIP scenes - 3 min.

Your renderings are great, but they do make my point.
Those dark surfaces come from lack of radiosity, and to compensate them in Lightworks you would have to set at least one more shadowless light pointing up, and the maybe photoshop it a bit, and still get a cardboard feeling.
The first impression you pictures make could be quite negative, because all of the black.
The feeling you get is not a happy feeling.

You know what Miguel ?, you're right. I just went through all the projects I made with lighworks and most of them have a dark mood, but it has more to do with my dark nature than lightworks. I just like'em like that. I always was in minority which pointed that Artlantis renders, despite it's obvious advatages, has a tendency to overexposure and overcolourized. You call your scene "happy", for me it looks like the little girl is pointing at the nuclear explosion on the horizont. I respect that you needed this kind of unique lighting for this particular project, but that's a problem with 80% of ArtR scenes I've seen - they're burn out, so yes comparing to them, my scenes look dark. The point is - if your scene/space is too dark - maybe problem is not your renderer but a design. Boosting radiosity in ArtR is the same cheating as using compensating light in LW.
AFAIK Art4.5= classic ant Art5= Artlatis R and there is a possible Artlantis Studio that has the Radiosity of R and lets you do animations. The main difference between 4.5 and R is that R does not do animation and 4.5 does.

i thought that artlantis 5 is just an upgrade for 4.5
anyway i ve already ordered it so lets hope is similar to 4.5

WENDY_NEVERLAND wrote:
lets hope is similar to 4.5

It is not.

You will be advised to take a couple of days to learn you way around the new Art.lantis.

If you jump right into it and try to emulate your 4.5 workflow, it will get pretty frustrating.

Best thing would be to download the excellent video tutorials Abvent has on their website, and go once trough them BEFORE running Art.lantis R and then use them while you learn the program.

Postpone real work for a couple of days and experiment with old Art.lantis 4.5 files.

Things to look out for in this new version that are very dissimilar to 4.5:

Radiosity: of course. (R stands for Radiosity, I think, not for Reallyslowrendering). This takes a while to get used to, but you will get pretty good images real soon.

New materials: Fresnel and Neon glass are two materials that will give your rendering the extra oompah. They are not easy to handle, and they have no parallel in 4.5, so you need to experiment.

Postcards: This is really hot. you save your image as a postcard i your album, then you can reapply all those materials on other projects, drag and drop easy.

Objects: This is something else. Now you can just import your shell from archicad, and the fill the scene with all kind of objects. You can even create your own object.

Other stuff you will learn as you get along.

One thing to remember: This is not an upgrade to 4.5, this is a new program, but with the same philosophy - ease of use, real time preview, one click material/light/camera assignment.

Ah, and no film making, for that you will have to wait for Art.lantis Studio, coming this year...

have fun

When you are passionate about a subject, it is no bother to talk about it... sometimes the difficulty is to make me shut up.

About the image: there is only one light source (sun), atmospheric light and Neon glass (a material). No funny tricks like diffuse light, lightsources pointing to the ceiling and whatever.

Ah! And 20 minutes rendering...
Build in ArchiCAD, rendered in Artlantis.

Trees and people are library objects, I stopped using ArchiCAD props for rendering.

The tree comes with ArLantis (just one, if you want more you have to pay for them).

people I downloaded at www.formfonts.com/
They have 3ds files, you convert them into Artlantis objects in about 3 minutes each (with practice). It costs about 9€ a month, and you can download 30 objects (plus 30 textures) every day.
I have learned (the hard way) that it is almost impossible to get good interior lighting only on sunshine, specially if you have a deep room with lot of obstacles.

I guess this is why Abvent people invented neon Glass - to allow us non rendering professionals to cheat and get quick results.

So here are the settings for that particular scene. I think neon Glass is responsible for 99% of the outcome, and heliodon/sky illumination play a minor role.

This, I should add, is a slow rendering setting (neon and Fresnel do take a lot out of your machine), so it would be a good idea to do a 320*240 no aliased experiment beforehand.

Ah, and when you hit the jackpot, don't forget to save your settings as a Postcard. I have reused that Neon Glass in all my dark interiors, with minor adjustments.

As I am no Betatester for AC10, I can speculate freely. I do not think there will be Rad in lightworks so soon, for the same reason it is not there yet: Graphisoft must have an agreement with Abvent about this.

Besides, even if there where Rad, I still would not leave Artlantis (despite all those horrible bugs, reminds me of AC
It is not about (well, not only) radiosity, it is about ease of use, instant preview, drag and drop, etc. It is about not being a professional illustrator, but simply an architect who needs some fast decent looking renderings.

After all, here is life after Radiosity...
Well, now.

ejrolon has a point, I think.

of course Artlantis has all this new capabilities, like Radiosity, fresnel, neon, objects, album, multiprocessor using, what not.

But, if someone asked me what the MAIN difference is, from 4.5 to R, I could say loss of moviemaking.

And it is not just me, check <LINK_TEXT text="http://www.abvent.com/community/survey/ ... _sondage=1">http://www.abvent.com/community/survey/results_survey.php?id_sondage=1</LINK_TEXT>

"80% Question 37- Radiosity and Animation: I want radiosity with animation, even if it is slow"

Most of artlantis users complain about Abvents policy to divide their software in two, dropping animation from R version and including it in (soon to be released) Studio.

So, if you want to be nasty about it, you might be justified to say that dropping animation is the most important change for Artlantis users.

I know it has been for me! I have not done a single animation in 6 month, when formerly I used to do one for almost any project.

have fun (but without animation...)

Agreed. This is a decision that I also don't like too much ...

... but that is not the only difference.

Don´t misunderstand me

I love Abvent for Artlantis R (it makes my life SO much easier regarding my clients), but I would marry them if they had included animation ( and less bugs...).
Hi Miguel,

Just from a side since I'm not an Artlantis user.

As I am no Betatester for AC10, I can speculate freely. I do not think there will be Rad in lightworks so soon, for the same reason it is not there yet: Graphisoft must have an agreement with Abvent about this.

What do you mean by that? AFAIK Abvent didn't invent radios(c)ity, they just implemented it and optimized for speed and perfomance in the ArtR call it <S></S>fast<E></E>Radiosity.

Please put some light on it since I'm not an expert and might be wrong.

Maybe there won't be any radiosity in AC 10, but we'll never know if we won't demand it, after all if Graphisoft want to stay on top they need to listen what are the needs on the market. LightWork Design is ready to cooperate in this matter:

http://www.lightworkdesign.com/full_pr.php?prid=112

Best regards
