That's fantastic. Thanks for posting the news! Anyone have an idea what they are charging for the plugin package?

(I think I'll wait to hear the price and some user experiences before considering it, since I'd have to also pay $600 for the 7 to 8.5 upgrade in addition to the plug-in...)

Great to see more 3rd party support for AC! <E>😉</E>
I am suffering from information overload. If I am getting it right, the Cinema 4D price is the addition of a base package (R8, USD 595) and a module (Advanced Render, USD 495), or alternatively that of a base+modules bundle (XL), which you can also get as a 'competitive sidegrade' (XL for USD 1395) if you are coming from some other rendering program.

Am I correct in understanding that for architectural illustration you only need the base package + the Advanced Render module (USD 595 + 495)?

Does the new plug-in change any of that (the software needs, or the money-to-shell-out needs)?

yes that is basically all you need, and you can buy the sketh and toon module if you want sketch rendering capability.

The fist batch of CD's had a production flaw, but I have it working now.

This is great!!!

Users should be cautious about assigning materials - the translator allows for several options - so far I like "by material" best.

Perhaps we can expand this thread to include best practices for using the translator as more of us get with it!

This is by far the best way to get radiosity with ArchiCAD models!!

I'm very intrigued by this development. I've heard good things about Cinema 4D, but have not owned it. I downloaded a demo yesterday and will give it a whirl this weekend.

Problem: I don't yet have ArchiCAD 8, nor does Maxon send the plug-in out as a demo.

If a friendly reader of this last is already set up with the Cinema 4D plugin, would it be possible to send me ANY C4d-ready output from ArchiCAD, so I can see how it behave in Cinema 4D? I don't really want to spend time modeling in Cinema 4D, when I'd rather be testing its ability to render ArchiCAD output.

Thanks a million.
I have seen and tested the plugin and I dont like it at all.
The good thing is archicad outputs to .c4d faster then to .3ds, what bothers me is the way it lists files in object manager. 3ds output is cleaner and objects are easyer to group. I should have tested some more, but didn't have time. If I had both, I'd still use .3ds output, but thats just me.

I have tested AC>C4D plugin designing a big project and it works like a charm.

It works like export to ArtLantis. Architectural model is being changed in ArchiCAD and than updated in C4D.

When imported in C4D, ArchiCAD model becomes an group of objects which can be edited and updated from ArchiCAD, which keeps C4D model clean.

And a question for C4D radiosity:
Should I use spot lights of sun objets to light the scene?
I ask this because I used to set radisity in LightScape in real life values.

Now that the ArchiCAD 8 eXchange for Cinema 4D is available, this web site gains a new importance. Dwight told me about this place over a year ago and it keeps improving every month. Thanks for the tip Dwight.

Render King : http://www.renderking.com/

After you have set-up the lighting, textures and cameras, you can produce many high-res stills or a feature length animation at a cost point that will make you very popular with the firms principal. After you finish it would be a good time to ask for that raise.

Here is some of the math for cost analysis:

This render farm offers 4657+ Cinebench (Cinebench 2003) 38+ ghz of render power supporting Alias Maya Complete 4.5 and Maxon Cinema 4D v8.503. It consists of 21 dedicated Render Stations - with Athlon 2400+ (currently 13 cpu's) and AMD Athlon 1800+ (currently 8 cpu's) processors, each with 512 mb of DDR ram and 40 GB hard drives, all run Windows XP Pro. Plus dedicated FTP, NET Render and File Server that runs OSX, 1.5 gb of ram and a 80 GB hard drive. Another OSX Server acts as the "controller" system and is continuously monitoring the farm for proper running programs and processes - reporting detailed process and cpu feedback to me via multiple email accounts and cell phone text messaging 24 hours a day. All systems are running on a segmented 100baseT switched network and large UPS battery back up systems for optimum speed and stability.

There are up to 15,120 render hours available per 30 day period (21 dedicated render farm CPU's X 24 hours in a day X 30 day usage period).

For Cinema users this equals 48.47 cents per hour for the whole farm; 2.30 cents per CPU per hour; or 1.2 cents per gigahertz hour.
math check 349 / 15,120 * 21 cpu = .4847 cents per hour for all farm | 349 / 15,120 hours = .02308 per cpu hour | 38.24 ghz * 24 hours * 30 days = 27,532.8 (349 / 27,532. = .0126 cents per ghz hour

For Maya users this equals $9.56 per hour for the whole farm. Currently, Maya 4.5 projects are unable to be user controlled and will be added to the render queue manually - but finished rendered frames are available immediately for FTP download.
