I use Archicad, and exprt to Maya also. You need to go to the Alias site, and download the 3DS import plugin, under the pluggin section.
Within Archicad, there are several methods to export to Maya, and I choose materials under the chioces, I will post a screenshot later tonight to show what i am talking about, but for now heres a quick rendering made real fast.

<T>Hi, I'm on Archicad V8.1, and trying to export to Maya (OBJ), Archicad 'seems to export fine (no error messages, but can't open the Maya OBJ file. Message returned is "your OBJ file contains faces shared by multiple groups. Maya cannot create multiple objects for this file. A single mesh object will be created instead. The OBJ group information will be captured in Maya sets."

Stumped, jc, any clues would be appreciaetd</T>

hi
the OBJ format don't understands some vertex colors... or uv maps... so
try exports to 3ds and import into maya... for this you need a bonus tools... you can download from alias website.. for me works fine..
try export materials , output textures and 8 characters namespace set to true..
have fun
