All that 3dstudio max imports is three axis and one arrow which i suspect is the light direction...

Look into the Tips&Tricks forum for Stefan's tutorials on exporting ArchiCAD model to other rendering apps; that might help.

This might be a ignorant question...but does you 3D max file have a .max extension or .3ds? ArchiCAD will only import the .3ds file.

the tutorials on his website don't cover this subject...

They do.
<LINK_TEXT text="http://www2.asro.kuleuven.ac.be/asro/En ... studio.htm">http://www2.asro.kuleuven.ac.be/asro/English/HOME/SBs/render/3dstudio.htm</LINK_TEXT>
And the Cinema4D-tutorial is mostly usable for max as well:
<LINK_TEXT text="http://www2.asro.kuleuven.ac.be/asro/En ... ac2c4d.htm">http://www2.asro.kuleuven.ac.be/asro/English/HOME/SBs/tutorial/tips/ac2c4d.htm</LINK_TEXT>

You can't generate a *.max file from ArchiCAD, but *.3ds files can be read just fine and with texture mapping intact.

Also check out the website of Marc Lorenz:
