Building Material Surfaces - What for?

I am having trouble understanding what the surface colour is for when creating a building material.

These colours do not show in 3D.

Is there a reason for having them?

The yellow warning triangle indicates you have legacy intersections on - Project Preference, Legacy. This project was probably upgraded from pre AC17.
If you hover over the yellow warning icon it’ll indicate also.

Yes, but read the information in the pop up (i button) under Legacy in Project Preferences to determine if you are ok with the changes that would potentially arise in your project.
If you’re only opening an old project to view, then I’d keep the switch on. But if you’re migrating the project up to the newest version, then I’d uncheck it.
