There is a method at ArchiGuide that reequires no GDL:

<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.graphisoft.com/support/archi ... lings.html">http://www.graphisoft.com/support/archicad/archiguide/wallrailings.html</LINK_TEXT>

It uses the Log walls - in combination with the columns, quite a proper railing!

Warning: log walls (of course) work only on straight walls, so you will have to approximate any curved segments with polygons. One does that in real life too.

<T>Greetings all! I have been monitoring and gleaning help from architalk for about a year and a half. The new web interface is great!
I am working on a residence and trying to easily create log railings for a large deck. I seem to recall seeing a way to make the standard vertical railing with round elements but cannot come across a way to accomplish. Any suggestions?
or
I have just scratched the surface of GDL. Could I duplicate the standard railing and modify the script to allow round elements?
Thanks.</T>

Which railing object are you referring to?

This would be a good candidate for you to dabble in some GDL.

1. Open an existing handrail object that closely resembles what you need.
2. "Save As" to a new name.
3. Edit/Add to the code per your needs.
4. "Save".
5. Test.
6. Enjoy.

Good luck, happy scripting.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yesterday before receiving the replys I experimented with the log wall, column route and it worked quite well. I will go back in and goof around with scripting this weekend.
