So far I've found that 'eyeballing' it and then tweaking the render in photoshop has given the fastest results. Tip: you can set the photo as background image in your 3d window in 3d window settings.

I suppose my method of doing this works well because most of the montages I did were on sites with a fair few buildings around to get a good sense of scale.

And in the case of an irregular structure, place a translucent box around it to simplify vanishing point location.

Align View is unreliable for exterior views unless the photo is accurate and possesses measurable reference lines.

Attached is a page from my "Artlantis Attitude" book giving some further hints.

yup thanks.
i was able to do it but i found the results really not good.
the general perspective was ok but the correct angle and camera height was tottaly wrong and just took me ages to tweak until it was close.
it only worked becasue i had two monitors, one with the photo and the other with archicad and the camera position.

I dont think this tool is very good.

Thanks.
Perhaps this happens because pictures are taken with real cameras with focal length, aperture width and lens distortion. You would need software that emulates physical cameras such as Cinema 4D in order to match the view.

There is a plugin for C4D called Photomatch and even with that, it's not that easy to align views.

Photo Match works fine in theory. Just make a rendering of a scene and use it as a background to insert another element. Once free of real world anomalies, the feature is flawless.

I have an idea for you. I use a similar method in C4D:

• PhotoRendering Settings. Add the final existing picture you are going to use for the photomontage. Try to use a size that fits your screen.
• 3D Window Settings. Background as in PhotoRendering.
• Move, rotate, pan camera until you get a fair result.

I believe this might help a little more than using two screens.

Cheers!
one more thing which is often forgotten, it really helps to pinpoint the exact location of where the photo was taken including the RL. If you then place the ArchiCAD Camera in this exact location you are starting of on the right foot and can tweak from there. As all ready mentioned you really would need to know the focal length used in the photo. saying this, it is not a strong point of ArchiCAD and most professionals use additional software / plug ins. Least but not last I have yet to come across a Photomontage which was not adjusted in post production. It's necessary as there is always "stuff 'that needs to be removed, hidden away, added and adjusted.
