Cel Shader in CineRender

Hi, has anyone had any luck getting correct outputs with the Cel Shader in AC23? I've wrestled with it a few times, but can't seem to get it to behave as I'd expect.

I've been following a few Cinema4D tutorials (as I believe that's what it's based on?) but their results are different, even if all the controls are pretty much the same.

This is the thing I'm trying to achieve: getting a luminant surface to receive shadows correctly. Archicad doesn't seem to show the shadows but just the base colour. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Or does it simply not work properly? I haven't managed to find any Archicad tutorials on it anywhere.
