3D Grass not working

So I have the grass button clicked in both the grass surface and my render options, but am still getting flat grass. Weirdly, it worked once this morning when I rendered, but now is rendering flat again, with what I think are the same settings.

Because it takes a while to process, I have even created a different project with just a 3x3 square of grass and it renders great and looks fluffy. I have checked both files and their settings for the grass surface and rendering process are the same.

Any ideas here or has anyone else encountered this? Thanks in advance.

there is apparently a limit in number of grass leaves per object. either cut the plane in multiple objects, or reduce density. just had same issue. confirmed.
