But only Revit Architecture 2008 can read IFC, as far as I remember. Previous versions (up to version 9.1) could not.

Autodesk obviously also prefers box pushers ... sad.

I have just recently been successful importing an Architectural Desktop model into ArchiCAD. My only challenge remains to be how to relocate the library parts that are brought in with this. So yes it can be done IF your IFC Add-on edition is the same that the revit/AD person is using (meaning IFC 2x2 on the export end and IFC 2x3 on the import end doesn't work) AND the Autodesk user is exporting from a 2008 product. THis is the only version of Autodesk anything that has the IFC certification. I will follow-up on how I resolve the library issue because they come in by default under the "other objects" category. Would like to move them to a project library.

I have done a bit of study on the IFC business..

It seems to be moderately passable. I had some things like profiled walls that mitered at corners. The profiles stayed intact, but the miters were gone.

Also, I had an MEP guy send me a 3d duct layout and all his transitions and elbows were gone.

The model I imported from AD 2008 was ductwork and all was fine, nothing missing. If I am not being prompted to choose a location for the IFC library parts am I doing something wrong?

I've had quite good results converting models between AC and Revit. Particularly from Revit Structure into ArchiCAD. There are all sorts of little issues and potential pitfalls, but for many purposes it works just fine.

Depending on how my time etc. works out over the next few months I may be writing something up on the subject. I'll keep y'all posted if and when anything develops.

Use 2x3 -- there is an add-on for AC9 available from the GS website if you don't already have it.

Thanks for the advice, Laura. I will keep trying with 2X3. I've got the add-ons for both 2X2 and 2X3, but when I tried creating a 2X3 file, I got the following error:

"Error: EDM Error - code: 1178 - <No such Express schema in database.>"

Anyone know what this means?
