<T>What is the best way to save to a .stl format?

Is there a plugin for AC11 for the mac?

Is there a 3rd party application that will convert some other format that AC will save out to?</T>

This is a fairly new topic but there is a fair amount in our forum archive if you search for "stl"

But export isn't easy.

Mostly, the model needs to be simplified and thickened in many places to result in a buildable file.

Hi

I don't know if this is helpful but....

If you are looking at export to a ZPrint 3d printer, it will also accept vrml (.wrl) files and the machine is supplied with software that will thicken up minimum width walls etc. Autocad 2008 will export stl files if you have access to a copy.

Chris - Is your firm actually using this printer? Results?

Hi Dwight

We have access to one in the same building. The machine is owned by another architectural practice and they are keen on making the equipment available on an agency basis. However, we have used it only once so far, prior to the training session and we made all the mistakes known to man!
However, the other firm has used it to make quite nice block models of university campus developments. Overall I wouldn't buy one for this practice, but it may be a useful facility in the future. A long view required here.

Happy new year!

Actually, I am purchasing a "Dimension 3d Printer" http://www.dimensionprinting.com/

It only takes stl files.

I think one of the old posts mentioned a free conversion program from vrml to stl. Quick Google came up with:

http://rapid.lpt.fi/rp-ml-2003/0731.html

<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.3dlinks.com/links.cfm?catego ... =catrating">http://www.3dlinks.com/links.cfm?categoryid=1&subcategoryid=11&order=catrating</LINK_TEXT>

A good guy locally is providing 3d printer services - upload to his ftp, and he ships you the model:
http://www.sweetonioncreations.com/

His printer accepts vrml directly from ArchiCAD. But, his software doesn't understand bump-mapped (or displaced) shaders, which would add a huge level of realism without much work to the result. So, brick reveals have to be solid-element subtracted, etc.

Does the printer you're getting understand bump/displayed textures, Jeff?

Cheers,
