<R>I modeled my building and put it on the materias name to later identify in Max. But when I imported the 3ds by material in Max it says Improper file format..
I tried dwg, 3ds, but none of them came separate by material... they grouped together in layers Wall, Slab... I need to substitute the materials that already have in my model...
Is there a way to do this?

in the dwg translator setup there`s no options to set them by material... </R>

Use these settings to save your 3D (from the 3D window) and you should be able to open your file and change materials. We use it here all the time.
