Solved the problem. If I remove all the Xrefs, it will save.

How practical - now I just need to copy everything from the xref layers to new ones and delete the xrefs (only if can do it again, because it seems that the xref control sometimes just forgets, which xrefs are linked...).

AC 10.815 bug / Unable to save / publish DWG

<R>SUMMARY

As mentioned in another thread AC 10.815 is sometimes unable to publish and or / save to DWG.

DESCRIPTION

I have a number of 10.0 files in which publishing to DWG will fail on some stories and sections/elevations.

Some stories/sections can be publish, others can't. I have even tried to delete all entities on a story which couldn't be published to DWG. Put even then I am unable to save or publish too DWG. And yes, I have tried different translators …. with no luck.

Saving a story / floor plan to DWG will give me a "Cannot write output file" error message. Publishing the same story will mark the file / item with status "Failed". Double clicking the list item gives me a nondescriptive error message: "Publishing of the item failed because ArchiCAD was unable to generate it."

This has happened to multiple ArchiCAD 10.0 projects / files. There is no clear pattern. I am able to publish some stories, and some not. Yesterday suddenly I was unable to publish story 1 in an ongoing project. This story has been published many times before, but not anymore now. (Deleting all entities will not help. Deleting all entities, saving, closing file, closing ArchiCAD, reopening Archicad, reopening the file and publish will not help.)

This is a real showstopper. I can't send DWG files to the engineers anymore. Graphisoft must have a look at this immediately!

REPRODUCE

No problem to reproduce on my system ….with given files, it's always like this

SOLUTION

a) Wait for bug fix
b) Workaround:
Save to AC9. Export from 9 (after loss of all special 10 entities).

ATTACHMENT

Screen shots.
I have to agree with you. There are bugs in the DWG translator of AC10-815/817. Some of them are severe. Graphisoft should not hesitate to release a fix immediately.

As of now, it seems that they're waiting for the Macintel release to send out a unified "fix all" hotfix. I find this is OK for lesser (perhaps annoying, but not critical) bugs, but this one really is a showstopper.

I think Archicad resellers all over the globe have the responsibility to inform customers that rely on correct DWG handling that they should wait for "hotfix 1" before finalizing their transition to AC10!

No, can't save/publish from a layout.

.... Update

I have to correct / clarify my self.
I am able to publish a DWG file (of problematic stories) by publishing a layout to DWG.

But there is a big problem: There are absolutely no entities in model space, and the drawing is inserted in paper space as a single block. Exploding the block will reveal that all entities are on layer 0. Useless.

Translator options
<S></S> Paper Space with Full Drawings content + Single DXF/DWG-file <E></E>
and
<S></S> Paper Space with Full Drawings content + Linked Xref drawings<E></E>
... both create the same useless result.

Using translator options
<S></S> Models Space as Flattened Drawing <E></E>
gives: "Publishing of the item failed because ArchiCAD was unable to generate it." error message ....

....somebody has moved this thread from other problems to "Data Exchange and Information Sharing." ??
I had similar problem wit publishing to DWG. After slowly deleting objects from a storey I found out a strange thing, that the problems were on a storey below the "problematic" storey. And the problem was in Window/door marker. After switching markers off, or change them to our old markers it started to work. Dont know if it helps in your case but, I saved to AC9 and publish from there.

This may not have anything to do with the issue but are the drawings on the layouts you are trying to publish set to Automatic Update?

I was getting the very same error message (and useless explanation) when trying to publish both DWG and PDF. I thought it may have been caused by the publishing action timing-out as AC was taking too long to do the whole BG AC update thing, so I switched them all to Manual Update and the problem went away ..

[Edit:] Should have read more carefully - i just noticed you were trying directly from the floor plan too so I guess it must be a different problem. In my defence it is 6:30pm on a Friday and im a few beers down

I have been tracking down the problem to one door placed 2 stories above the problematic story.

Deleting the door makes saving / publishing to DWG possible (2 stories below).

Even more important; changing door anchor from "Sill to Story3" = -175 mm to "Sill to Story3" = 0 mm or to "Sill to Wall base" = 0 mm, also makes saving/publishing possible. (Wall bottom is 175 mm below Story 3).

Some self-healing occurs, ... sometimes. After changing back to using "Sill to Story3" / - 175 mm it is sometimes still possible to save !!! (I have tried this multiple times.)

Lesson learnt: using anchor point "Sill to storyN" can introduce errors in the project file.

There is a bug her. GS please investigate.

PS
It is no problem to save/publish the story in which the door is placed.
The wall is shown on "Own Story Only" and "Symbolic Cut"
In another project file I have tracked down the error to windows with anchor point below the wall.

No problem for ArchiCAD unless you try to save to DWG (the story below) …
Well -- got a reply and the files are being looked at. I am still not able to save either of the two floors of the garage part of the overall file. The checks noted in this thread have been extremely helpful and are directing the process for me to find the culprit. Even the special built-in translator fails -- just do not know where to turn next.
Old methods do keep us mentally in check.. finally got the files to do what they should. The door tags are off, the checking to assure that no opening has a negative bottom (below the bottom of the wall) and going to the model view settings to change all the fills to contours only and all the lines to hairlines -- much as we did with these settings in previous versions, the files translate using the default and are actually both paper and model space! Thanks to David Tauer of GS the thinking to make all of these settings do what is supposed to happen, happen.

Just reinstalled my old ACAD 2000 in the office token PC and looking at the resultant dwg, the translation is workable. The frustration with all the new settings is not. Need to have a lot more training, reading, and conversations about how these thing get done.
Haven't met this bug for a while now.

I've recently found that if I save the the .dwg template file while it is in paper space (vs. model space) I will no longer get "failure" when translating. I tried this on a whim and it worked to my surpise. Maybe this will work for some of you. -insert emoticon of your choice here--> .

I'm having similar kind of a export problem. I'm working on a huge file with several Xrefs and stuff, so I really don't have time to track down the problem.

It seems to me that the bug is somehow "irrational". I had this problem with this file in December. Then it has worked fine until now. This is something really annoying.

It seems that now there is no proper way to work with Archicad if you're using a Intel based mac. AC9 crashes every 10min, if the file is big enough and 10 is just so full of bugs, that nobody really wants to rely on it. It really shouldn't be this hard to cope with basic things.

Solved the problem. If I remove all the Xrefs, it will save.

How practical - now I just need to copy everything from the xref layers to new ones and delete the xrefs (only if can do it again, because it seems that the xref control sometimes just forgets, which xrefs are linked...).

Aha!! For me the trick was under Publisher Set, Format>Options copying "Special Built-in Translator" and changing Settings>Layers to "Visible Layers Only." This was after following all suggestions above. And my file had no xrefs or doors with "Sill to Story."
