metanoia wrote:
I missed Ransom's analysis of sorts of Revit vs ArchiCAD and wanted to clear up a few of the points he made, and back some of the others. Sorry to be late to the party!

I've attached that same PDF with comments.

I find it amusing that a European software platform could play better at NCS than Revit, developed in the USA <E>😛</E>

Wes, I appreciate your rebuttals as we try to understand these two products.

As for the NCS implementation, it happened in ArchiCAD 7.0 r3 The 20th Anniversary Edition in the silver box! <E>🙂</E>

Below are some responses I had to your comments.

Power and Elegance:

A-4 Wes: "Users can break these connections between elements by moving objects with the 'Disjoin' option selected. If you didn't know this, then you could have the problems discussed in this point."

Normally, this is true and it is the way Revit is supposed to work. But we have seen instances in a few projects where it was not possible to untangle the knot without deleting some elements and rebuilding them. Even after hours of trying every other alternative by various top users in the company.

A-6 Wes: "I can't corroborate this point at all. You can build a Revit model in any order you wish, and unless the author has discussed points a. to e. with one of the developers, I don't know where these facts came from. It looks like speculation."

It is large largely true that you can build the model in any order you want, if you build it once from beginning to end. However, our practice requires changing direction and many times before the project issued. This is where the Revit model starts to get tangled up. Let me give you an example that hints at what is going on under the hood:

Open a completed model in one session and start a blank project in another. Then randomly cut content from the completed project and paste them into the blank project. In ArchiCAD, you would get an identical copy of the original building
In Revit you would soon be dealing with many nested warnings and errors and if you could complete the process, the building would likely be hard to recognize.

Admittedly, this is a contrived experiment, but it points to the real-world problem of using Revit before the design is firmly nailed down and also the ability to borrow from past projects.

Construction Documentation:

B-6 Wes: "6. I have yet to find a need where a separate pen table is required. Revit's lineweight system is generally foolproof, and of course external DWGs can be incorporated into the Revit drawing set. So on this point I'm left to assume that the author is referring to other kinds of data that AC can place onto sheets?"

I am hardly alone in lamenting that Revit’s DWG import and export are both surprisingly deficient. One only needs to look at the "Best Practices" of firms that use Revit and AutoCAD on the same projects or collaborate with others who use AutoCAD. This becomes glaring when firms expect to recycle their AutoCAD detail libraries (that often need a tweak on each project) and find that they finally end up taking the third option below, after trying the first two:
1: simply linking the DWGs
2. import and cleanup
3. redraw from scratch

As for control of pen tables at the drawing level, it helps the graphics of DWGs that were drawn in different CAD standards.

B-15 Wes: "The author is not aware of the "Override Element" dialog which permits this. This could also be accomplished using Filters."

I would be happy to learn better ways to handle this, but in the situation that we had, the override worked categorically on floors and so did the filter, or it needed to be applied manually to each element in each view. Overriding the cutline lineweight was also tedious per view and did not survive changes to the model.

B-16 Wes: "The author is not aware of the snapshot tools which allow a model view geometry to be ported to a Drafting View, which is a static 2D view."

I do know about this feature and we use it. It is called "Freeze Drawing" and it essentially does a round-trip to DWG in order to break the link with the model. But it also loses all the hatches and line weights. Basically, it makes a crude clip and does not have ArchiCAD's capability to elegantly update that drawing with model changes without destroying the user's drafting efforts.

B-25 Wes: " 25. Revit has curved gridlines, but if you want a grid with a 2nd center point or a different radius, you'll need another grid for this."

When we tried that, Revit required us to use a different grid ID the "second" piece of the gridline.

Thanks again for the discussion!

Best regards,

Well, for what it's worth, Revit 2010 was also a disaster. It only had the new freeform modeling tool, a new UI which everyone hates and some upgrades in the API. That's it. So Revit 2010 could be compared to Archicad 14 as far lack of new features.

The competition however isn't Revit, but Rhino or even Solidworks in the future. Those software Graphisoft needs to keep a close eye on.

So - You are a free person now !
Succes with Autodesk .
I will support Graphisoft because i like Archicad and i hope the future versions will have superior modelling abilities.
With Cigraph , Cadimage , VBE seems to be OK.
Only thing that dissapoint is the amateur level of EcoDesigner addon .
The big approximation without thermal bridges taked into account.
Here MUST be integrated a good solar study with a good mesure of solar energy gain .
The BIM concept must integrate a flexible formulas database specific to many country different regulations (like archicad calculation schedules)

Good luck Graphisoft !

I have seen some firms move from ArchiCAD to Revit but this has been through a management decision (the decision makers being non-CAD/BIM users) or by attrition (ArchiCAD users leave and Revit users are hired).

I'm not sure of any cases of a skilled ArchiCAD user making the switch voluntarily and/or preferring Revit, though To Waltz may be an exception (Tom are you still here?). He was a very advanced ArchiCAD user (check his post count here on the forum) and I think he may have switched altogether to Revit.

By in large it seems that anyone who masters one is reluctant to switch to the other.

I have used both quite intensively and still find ArchiCAD substantially better.

And I mean a real one, not one of those "both softwares have their strengths and weaknesses" politically correct one.
I realize that eventually bad mouthing Revit could compromise you, so it is understandable that you would not like to put yourself in that position, but as an ArchiCAD user in an ever-growing Revit world I would find it invaluable to have access to a real comparison, not the same old junk thrown at us by software manufacturers and resellers.

I am happy to be honest in my assessment. I don't think I'll get in big trouble with Autodesk for saying I still find ArchiCAD is better than Revit. I don't have time to go into much detail right now. (Perhaps I should start my own blog on the subject.)

In general Revit's strengths are at the front end of the design process where the automatic functions are an aid to getting something together quickly. It is also appealing to new users and new architects/interns for the same reasons. Where I find Revit frustrating is when those automatic functions and relationships start making it difficult to get it to do what I want it to instead of what it thinks is best. The worse cases of this have been when things I have placed spontaneously change to the Revit preferred arrangements after the fact (I have since learned to anticipate this and avoid it in most cases).

Though ArchiCAD lacks many of the relationships found in Revit it s still very fast and facile for the initial design and editing. For me it is better than Revit in this regard because I know very clearly what I want and can set up the relationships myself without struggling with or overriding Revit's preferences. For construction coordination models ArchiCAD's obedient behavior makes it much preferable to Revit.

As I have said before ArchiCAD's selection tools beat everything else all hollow. The only thing I've found that comes close is Tekla (it has many of the functions but they are a bit click heavy compared to ArchiCAD). ArchiCAD's facility for quick adjustment and editing (ie pet palette etc.) is also <S></S>way<E></E> better than Revit's sketch mode.

There is much more that I could say but that will have to do for now.

My best summary description is that working with ArchiCAD is like a dance. With Revit it is more like wrestling.

I think you meant Tom Waltz? He is working at Bentley with Microstation these days I believe...

But, I think Ransom Ratcliff, an old ArchiCAD expert, is in the Revit trenches now?

I agree... hearing from an strong AC convert would be very valuable.

I think GS know that and we will wait AC 15

You guys and your post counts! Like more is always better!

Tom was a great ArchiCAD user though and now he is working ~for~ Bentley as a Microstation product designer.

And last time I spoke to Ransom he said something along the lines of 'using the latest version of Revit felt like using ArchiCAD 7'! Ha! Still makes me laugh! I haven't 'diluted my BIM experience' by investing in Revit yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if some EX-AutoCAD Reviteers discovered an ArchiCAD 7 equivalent and thought they'd found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Cheers,

PS. Don't flame me - I'm just being jovial (and perhaps proving how a post count is not always a reflection of one's ArchiCAD expertise!)

Ha! That just shows how passionate you are about ArchiCAD right Stuart? At least you post good advice.

What's needed is a rating system if we are to get a real idea of expertise. I worked with a receptionist once who talked a LOT. Didn't make her an expert receptionist (trust me!). Besides some of us could about double our post count just by saying 'you're welcome!'.

So at risk of being guilty of inflating my post count, I better get to work and let the discussion get back on track!

Cheers,
Putting Auto Pilot on has its advantages but you get more freedom when its off.

Maybe the best program will have an Auto Pilot mode for non free form design as they require less manipulation.

Then Auto Pilot off for free form modeling.

I came from Chief Architect and still use it for simple houses but when I get more customization in a design I start wrestling with Chief so I use ArchiCAD instead.

Chief is faster for simple houses but its a fight when houses start having commercial features and accuracy drops off.

But it appears here that so far Revit maybe better for free form but does not have the design flexability of tools for manipulating a free form model like AC has.

If in AC15 free from modeling is the focus of AC15, this could out srtip Revit becuse of its manipulation tools and no doubt GS will add more tools to get the job done right.

One must not forget the use of maxform add on for AC as well since this creates the free form model as I am told, with AC 14 tools is this really superior to Revit 2011?

I would hope so.

If you are in the know please tell us what you think.
