group by material

Am dabbling with a materials take off. Am wondering how to get sub totals based on exterior material surface. I have a basic test set up with two wall surfaces. Easy enough to get a total but how to get sub totals on each material?

In the scheme settings add a flag next to the outside surface.

Seriously that was crazy simple. Thanks so much Barry.

Soooo, have to say though, why a cryptic flag symbol? Why not a button that says something logical like; Sum.

Even in the help files it doesn't really have a name - they just refer to it as the flag icon ...

• Display the flag icon next to the one schedule field for which you want to display subtotal cells in the schedule, as well as sum/quantity cells.

Actually you should place it next to the are field rather than the surface field - although in this case it makes no difference.
And it will only work so long as you have the sum/count active (middle button) on the area field.

It may have something to do with the fact that "Flag" is a computing term indicating an ON/OFF, True/False state:

In this case the "Flag" means the item based on which Sums need to be calculated.

The IS is a wonderful powerful tool but it seems this little example of a cryptic user interface could be improved to make it more intuitive and user friendly. Interesting that the help files vague about it.
