BUT can we create a dwg file either from a Layout Book or Archicad to suit their set of preferences (which they are going to email over in the form of a CTB file). No doubt this will change with time?

We understand there is a problem with "editting" fills. We can avoid this.

What we need to do is match or synchronise with their preferences.
As always we would like to hear of similar experience.........?

Ask them to eTransmit you their template DWG file; use it for the definition of styles, linetypes, layers, colors, etc etc etc and as yout template file in the Translator.

All should be well.
