There are lots of cheap power tools on the market but buying even an expensive one doesn't make a good carpenter. My experience is that while these kinds of things produce some time wasting pictures rarely do they contain enough depth to replace professionals. At the same time they present an opportunity for us to advance ourselves as proficient designers against poorly laid out software written by novices.

Chief Architect has a niche in the architectural market place but its output of a house doesn't compare to my output of a simple garage designed and detailed in ArchiCad.

As far as I am concerned there is no danger of our profession being replaced by software. Quite the contrary. Look what happened to graphic designers back in the nineties.

At first everyone seemed to think that desktop publishing would put all but a select few out of business as most people would do their own brochures and flyers and so on. But what happened is that people tried that, found out "hey this stuff is <S></S>hard<E></E>", and developed a new, deeper appreciation for the value of good graphics and the importance of hiring a professional. Since then the field has expanded dramatically. The Academy of Art College (now University) has gone from one modest building where they taught "applied arts" (ie graphic design) to gobbling up large areas of San Francisco real estate (and even adding a school of architecture).

Let's hope more people try to design their own projects and realize just how difficult it is to do well.

I use both programs extensively, and your remark indicates that you don't really know what Chief Architect can actually do at the moment. It is not a "consumer grade" program anymore. Given that both programs can easily adjust lineweights and linetypes, and have extensive linetypes and fills, as well as standard TrueType fonts, I'm not sure what superiority your output could possibly have.
