3DS was the original 3D Studio file format.
Originally the program was called 3D Studio.. Later a new version was released called 3D Studio Max, and with that version came the >max extension.. By that time .3ds had kinda become one of the standard export options,, bit like .dxf.

As I remember it went from autodesk to descreet then to autodesk???

3Ds max = 3D Studio Max (a.k.a '3D studio', 'Max', '3DS') = 3D modelling / rendering / animation software.
www.autodesk.com/3dsmax

.3DS = file format that can be used to transfer 3DS Max files between other users and other software (e.g Archicad)

.Max = 3DS max's native file format. harder to translate than .3DS.

However, www.3DS.com takes you to Dessault Systemes, how make Solidworks + Cartia among other things (more CAD software).

tom, thanks for your response.

I had simply assumed that 3ds was autodesk....and 3ds max was the new and improved AUTODESK

Your post clarifies why I found no 3ds mention at autodesk. So as happened recently someone requests a 3dsmax file what if anything do they not get from me by virtue of me "merely" forwarding a 3ds file?

thanks in advance, Cary
You mean instead of sending them a .max file?
I'm not really sure sorry - as the .max file is the native file format it probably has a bit more information in it. To be honest I haven't touched the software for about 6 years, so I'm a bit vague on all the details.
