So many reasons

1) AC is free for the students and the University
2) There is a limit to how many courses can be taught had to choose
3) Runs in Mac and Win
4) Artlantis, Maxon plugin and Objective are free for students
5) Want to teach that there is other software that is not produced by Autodesk
6) Revit's interface
7) Autodesk
Autodesk
9) Autodesk

No, I don't get a dime (from GS) for teaching 3 (15 student) courses a year, I even have to pay for my "pro" license.

<T>I have been informed by the local Autodesk Reseller that AutoCAD 2010-11 is going to be the last release and that everyone will have to move to Revit.

The reason for the call is that I am not teaching Revit at the school and they know that I teach Autocad and they want me to teach Revit, but they forgot that I teach AC.

Of course I have no confirmation from any other official source and it might be an exaggerated comment from a salesman…</T>

I find that pretty hard to believe that Autocad would go away.

Most likely, he meant Autocad Architecture, which is the current name of what used to be Architectural Desktop.

Agreed that it doesn't make any sense but I asked to make sure and he was clear about it being Autocad, not Desktop. Imagine the sales pitch to regular Autocad offices.
The conclusion,
Over zealous salesman…

The pitch,
Autocad is the past, as is working in 2D. If you don't start teaching Revit you are failing your students because they are not learning the One and Only Standard in BIM and no other program integrates Structure, Mechanical and Electrical and it is used by all the professionals in the construction industry.

My stupid question,
What are the main differences between Revit and Archicad? Architectural Desktop? Gehry Systems? Microstation?

The stupid comment,
AC has not been on the market for too long.

The second stupid comment,
Archicad is a copy of Revit, since Revit was first to market with a BIM solution.

Market Share,
All the architects and engineering offices are moving to Revit

Sale Special…
When you buy Autocad you get a free Revit license or vice versa. Need to be legal? Get 2 programs for the price of 1.

For the students,
Revit is free for students (Waiting for confirmation)
For a fee we will train your students (18 hrs) and certified them as Revit Specialists.

...as if! The fact that this statement was put into print made it completely ridiculous.

I'm glad that you, as a known (and respected) Revit user is staying objective.

I also teach BIM to the students of Architecture at our Department. While we have been teaching AutoCAD for as long as I can remember, we recently updated to AutoCAD Revit Series (= AutoCAD + Revit). However, for reasons that are fairly similar to what ejrolon is explaining, I chose to instruct ArchiCAD instead of Revit.

ArchiCAD & Revit are both freely available for students (Thank You, Both!)

I have no information about MaxonForm being available. Any links?

Our Autodesk reseller is very active in promoting Revit. Not as badly-informed as the example, but narrow-minded in any case. For mostly ethical reasons, I choose for ArchiCAD as a cross-platform and non-Autodesk alternative for Revit. I personally believe that Revit and ArchiCAD are comparable and each has it's advantages over the other. But the forced subscription scheme, the Autodesk focus on only Microsoft Windows platform (including .NET) and the lack of respect for end users has motivated me to not go with Revit. That said, I'm (slowly) learning Revit to be better informed.

As to the original quote: AutoCAD end-of-life? As long as it sells (and it seems it does, LT and AutoCAD cater for much more licenses than Revit and Inventor combined), they will keep providing it.

Oh, and a nice example of Autodesk's lack of respect for end-users: the retirement of VIZ, forcing users to upgrade to the more expensive 3ds Max.

AutoCAD isn't dead: it just smells funny. And it's not because it's nearly dead -- it's because all the civil engineers are using it AutoCAD is the workhorse for a lot of applications for which Revit will never be used -- roadway design on a large scale is one.

And the move with VIZ is nasty -- especially since 3ds max and max design are the same price!
