ArchiCAD does not open AutoCAD 2004 (or newer, 2005 is due soon) file format. The newest one it opens is 2000/2002. So, ask your consultant to send you the DWG in 2000/2002 format.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but Autocad 2000 is the most recent version supported by Archicad. The program is not lying to you.
