The time has come for a new machine, what are the best and tested recommendations out there for a high spec PC set up? Any suggestions most welcome.

Cheaper and better than equivalent models from Dell and HP according to what I've seen and heard, even after buying XP at retail prices.

The best possible deal seems to be the Macbook,
GS is not willing to test it stating that is does not meet spec.
WHY?
This is hogwash. Yes only 64 MB vram but this is used very differently. In fact seem to have the capacity of 256 set up.
I took my daughter’s, Macbook loaded AC9 and connected it to my old 25” Apple cinema display. One thing fore sure It is much faster then may G5 with dual 2 GHZ with a 256 ATI card.
So why is that this is not acceptable to be TESTED by GS?

I hope when you say "PC", you mean and Intel or Intel-compatible processor-based machine (which includes Apple machines), in which case this is relevant information.

Thank you for the above information, I am currently running Intel based pc, and Windows Xp Pro and V10 ArchiCAD. Was initially thinking of building duel processor system ie. 2x Xeon or 2xOpteron CPU's. The cost however being a bit off putting. Perhaps new single processor Intel 2 Duo with ATI 256 or 512MB graphics card would be pretty good?
I do not have much experience with Mac's and switching all software would present a big cost as well.
Any thought about the new DDR2 RAM?

Thanks again!
There's no cost to switch the software if you use the Mac to run Windows.

Matthew, I think Stepan is talking about 'building' his pc which is a bit cheaper then buying it lock-stock in one box especially from the manufacturer who is notoriously known as rather expensive (don't get me wrong I do not wish to start PC vs Mac argument)...

I think Apple has seen the error of its ways and is very competitive these days. feature for feature and name brand to name brand it is often cheaper. It will never compete with the home builts.
Thanks Rob, you are right on that one. No, I am not interested in PC vs Mac wars ither, just wondering if there is anyone out there with a high end Intel or AMD system setup? And would also like to find out what components are most crucial for AC10 and 3D rendering. CPU or RAM or both? Thanks...

Stepan,
I am not good at high-end pc specs but the spec under my signature is a generic built and it's got a fantastic grunt on really big projects I am working on.

I buy a brand name car too

yep, that's what I would do if I had some spare pocket money for a nice SLK,
. However I can not be bothered to spend even an extra penny on some silly wires and flashy operating systems - bugger it all really. Have been with comps for 20 years - it's all water under the bridge mate...doesn't matter if it has a fruit or any opening type as a symbol, we are just mouse-clicking our lifes away.

It depends on how you value your time. I prefer to do things with my kids than to build and maintain computers. I also take my BMW to the mechanic on those rare occasions that it needs service.

None. In Archicad, LightWorks rendering is done with the CPU.

Have lots of RAM and a fast hard drive.

The main performance measure with graphics cards is in real time frame rates while navigating the model in 3D and 3D representation in OpenGL "rendering" - textures, highlights, etc.

The faster the card and the more RAM it has will provide more frames and a smoother navigation when using larger windows.
